Up until now, I never use filters except for a polarizer when necessary. I've read that some photographers use a filter such as a UV on their lens at all times to protect it. Is that generally recommended?
When my kids use the SLR cameras, we put a UV filter on the lens.

I generally don't use them because they COULD degrade the image. They key word is COULD, as I'm not delusional enough to think my images are decent enough for a UV filter to make any difference at all.

I try though.

I think most professional photographers would rather replace a lens if damaged than to have another piece of glass that might affect the image.
