It's kind of funny how this movie (and, well, years and years ago, the comic) have such a prophetic vision of what's actually happening in the USA. The chancellor reminds me a lot of Dubbaya and of course certain circumstances will allow him to remain in power because of the patriot act, couple that with the neo-cons dissolving Gay rights every day, yeah, this story should have been based in America. ;)

As for the movie itself, I have no complaints. Natalie Portman is gorgeous, her acting is where it should be. I'm glad they didn't screw this up like they did with the Matrix. I guess it's because they already had a story they had to stay faithful to.

This is definitely one I will buy on DVD.

Kinda like 1984?

I wanted to get up and throw a hammer at the movie screen sooooo bad every time the Chancellor was talking.

All in all, very well done movie though, even though it was completely predictable and most parts not very original.

Even the ending, I mean, lots of explosions to the 1812 Overture, Caddyshack anyone?

Definitely a movie worth seeing at least a couple times though.

I agree, I enjoyed this movie in the theater but I also don't think its a movie that I would want to own and watch ever again on dvd. Very good popcorn flick that had some very long drawn out dragging parts that bored me, but it picked up here and there.

John Hurt was in both movies. He comes to a nasty fate in both movies. And both movies feature a "V" logo (in 1984, the symbol for the Party was a "V" with the word "INGSOC" overlaid).

i really loved it. it had a lot of explosions and typical action movie crap, but it was a lot deeper than that. it definitely had a lot to say about where we're headed....
i'd love to find a transcript of that "v" sentence so i can look at it--it just flew by so past :p

Ask and you shall recieve(courtesy of the imdb.com):

This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is it vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished, as the once vital voice of the verisimilitude now venerates what they once vilified. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin van-guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose vis-à-vis an introduction, and so it is my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.

I made it all the way to vichyssoise and then lost it, not a clue what that meant. I looked it up now though and it means essentially soup.

My mini-review of the film:

A metaphor for our times likened to Batman(not a man, a symbol) in it's deliverance and ideals. Only V is more concerned with corrupt goverment rather than a lawless society. The fighting while minimal is excellently and freshly done. The wordiness never comes across as wordy. And although it drags around the 1 hour mark. The ending is a huge payoff and a termination very fitting for such a unique film. In short, I loved it and will see it again shortly for sure.

Do not listen to critics, they are a stubborn distempered bunch and tend towards hate more than they do love.

And Fradac, my friend and I couldnt stop talking about it either.

Also, they did say that all the TVs had to be able to be taken over by the government to display the messages. So the government may have had them all made the same.

Yeah I realized that, I just wanted to poke a little fun at panasonic or whomever paid for that placement.

Now i need a mask like that.

Yeah. I called that, walking out of the theater, I remarked that come Halloween, there's sure to be an abundance of Vs. :p

I like the movie a lot.
It pretty much looks like where we are heading (Not as romantic) but what is, and will be coming...
Who cares if the Creator didn't like it. It's a movie... Not his comic book.
He sold his rights to it. Sittin on plenty of $$'s now I'm sure.
He's trashing it so he will look like more of an artist.

Portman was ok, but not great. Really - not what the reviewers are saying.

I can see why England has a problem with it, Kind of if we blew up the world trade center or Capital building in a movie. (Which I am sure they are working on something like that in Hollywood right now - but they will wait a while because of - Sensitivity - I guess) Come on it's been 5 years - Lets see a CG version of the WTC hollywood...

In the movie Independance Day aliens blew up the white house, but thats not terrorists ... well I guess they're technically terrorist aliens but thats a whole other topic. I see why it ruffled some feathers but its fiction and it was shot before the london bombings, its not like you should punish the creators for that.

um I didn't punish the creator for that reason - That was about him whining about his vision.... when he's laughing all the way to the bank.

And I was not being sarcastic - I want to see the WTC collapse in a movie

I know I'm a bit late to the party, but I just saw this tonight and wanted to say that it has to be one of the best films I've seen in quite a while! The story was compelling, it looked great and the acting was excellent - especially Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving. If you haven't seen it yet - go and see it!

I liked the movie a hell of a lot, but I loved the political connotations. I'm hoping people will be smart enough to see the parallels to the situation in America right now (You don't have to be very smart to see them, they are totally obvious).

I was wondering how the movie was received in the States for this very reason. I don't think many people would've liked the idea that America had fallen into civil war and what not but hopefully they just saw it as a premise for the film (along with the connotations).

Actually I was thinking that there were some visual rip-offs of Pink Floyd's The Wall, although those were obviously derivative as well.

Overall I was disappointed in V for Vendetta. Every time Portman spoke, I kept thinking that they could have replaced her with Keira Knightley, another mediocre actress with similar looks and build, but at least her accent would have been convincing. As AppleAce mentioned, the ending was predictable and hackneyed. I think the directing was very heavy-handed for a subject that's complex and requires nuances.

On the bright side, Weaving was quite entertaining (if sometimes over-the-top) as V. I enjoyed the subplot about the talk show host and it's a very visually appealing film.

I think the Bush-haters are greatly exaggerating the film's intentions. It's about whether terrorism is wrong even if the cause is right, that well-intentioned people can do horrible things, and that the greater good may require atrocious acts to advance it. I don't think the whole U.S. civil war part of the plotline is a point of commentary in itself, it's a selling point for the fascist regime that promotes order and discipline. Based on the constant lies and spin of the government-controlled media, it's not even clear if there really is a civil war going on in the U.S. in the background, or if the mouthpiece just says there is.

Very good movie. I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did and I'll most likely pick it up on DVD when it comes out.

Piece of music traditionally accompanied by canon fire, anyone? Caddyshack didn't "invent" the 1812 Overture "gag" anymore than they invented the "person gets hit by lightening" gag.

I just saw the film for the first time, and I must say it was impressive. It scared the crap out of me. This film really is prophetic. This is the US GWB would love to see.

Bought the DVD at the weekend and watched it on Saturday night. I thought it was a really good film, well acted, thought-provoking and interesting. A parable for our times, perhaps?

Bought the DVD last week, watched it about 10 times already - what a fantastic movie.
