Valve's Steam Link app, which is designed to let you stream games from your main gaming computer to another device, is coming to Apple Vision Pro.

The upcoming app for visionOS means users will be able to wirelessly stream games from Steam running on their Mac or PC to their Vision Pro headset, assuming the devices are on the same local network.

Prior to its official release, Valve is offering access to a beta of the app via TestFlight. The latest version improves network performance, allows streaming up to 4K resolutions, and allows users to dynamically adjust the curve of the display in panoramic mode.

The one limitation worth bearing in mind is that the client is for 2D streaming only and does not support VR content. Whether this will change in the future is unclear. Valve announced its intention to release a native Steam Link app for visionOS earlier this month, but the company has yet to share a general release date.

I've streamed games on my local network, performance was an issue.

Not sure how the AVP will work with games that are not designed for virtual reality.

Having now tried Steam Link over the weekend, it works incredibly well, no performance issues. But it is 2D not VR. Just a huge 2D screen in your virtual space.

But with CloudXR now supported there are a few native AVP VR apps that cover the VR. I also tried one of these (KRVR) with Microsoft Flight Simulator. Again worked flawlessly. KRVR will work with any VR game now.

So my old VR headset has taken a new spot in storage and AVP is my go to for gaming.

If anyone wants to see why it is just so good on AVP, take a look at this video with iRacing on AVP.

Well at least now we know that Valve has an AVP Dev Kit on their premises and that they know how to code for it.

Could this mean a port of Alyx is coming soon? 🤪

I originally played it through on a GTX970 and Oculus Rift which was barely playable, but the game was so compelling I persevered. So - I'm guessing that M5 should be able to handle it with ease. Come on Valve - you can do it!

Maybe its that, because when I tried streaming from my PC to my Mac (and they were in close proximity) the lagging/dropped frames were very noticeable.

Curious to see how this compares with Moonlight, which uses NVIDIA’s streaming protocols and is buttery smooth with no perceptible input lag.

I wish this wasn't super tricky to setup for the average user... Even the youtube videos seem to be over my head on setting this it.

Is there any writeups or videos that are up to date or that you would recommend for setting up?

When I first setup Sunshine/Moonlight for AVP, I used ChatGPT to help me create a custom step by step and deal with some minor troubleshooting. It actually wasn't that hard, and basically worked without any issue.

Any SteamVR, OpenVR, OpenXR game is now AVP compatible. So yes, Half Life and Portal will work. Hardware will limit some of this today. Some of the software will require a NVIDIA 4090 or 50xx card.

My guess is that the release of foveated streaming not long ago is part of what made this better.

They're not native. They still depend on a computer running the app to show them on the screen, and it won't move them to VR either. For games that haven't been ported to VR, you're using a keyboard/mouse with a screen close to your face.

This is meant more for using VR games available on Steam on the AR headset Apple makes.

Not sure about Steam but my PlayStation Portal used to have issues until I hardwired the PlayStation to the router. LAN is still the best even with the advanced routers we have.

Now, that would be a reason to start saving for one! Anyone tried Nvidia GeForce Now in their Vision Pro and wants to share their experience?

Valve is apparently the only ones who are going to do it.

The M5 can technically handle all kinds of stuff, but Apple steadfastly refuses to meet game developers halfway. Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that the game industry has almost entirely settled on standards that Apple absolutely refuses to support. It's Metal or nothing, so almost all developers have chosen "nothing."

Apple's grudge against nVidia is probably the most short sighted, poor business decision for personal reasons they have ever made.

Maybe that, and whatever reason Cook has to hate Scott Forstall so very much.

people still use this? I thought they all moved on to sunshine or gamesonwhales.
Many have.

But you install Steam Link on AVP, set up the PC connection, and from there you can launch games with one click directly from the headset. The simplicity will appeal to some.
