vanishing desktop items

On a week-old iMac, desktop icons sporadically vanish.
Clicking where one is (like the 'battleships' game) makes it appear.

I found this advice elsewhere:
-----
rm ~/Desktop/.DS_Store
mv ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist.old
killall Finder
-----

it brought them back, but they're still vanishing.

Suggestions?
