I talked to one Verizon rep, who said they no longer offer this service, even for a fee. But if I learned one thing from when the AT&T iPhones first came out it's that you can get different stories from different reps. So I'll keep asking.

Two more Verizon reps told me that they don't offer vanity phone number service, even for a price. One of them never heard of such a thing, but one of them remembered when they used to offer it.

I do have a nice Google Voice number, since they let you look for patterns or words when you sign up, but I won't have an equally nice number for my phone unless I'm extremely lucky.

If so they removed it recently. I did it a couple months ago. I did not even ask to pick a number though, just needed my number changed to anything else.

Could you tell me more about what happened? You asked to have a new number. Who picked the area code, prefix, and last 4 digits - you, them, or the computer? Was this on the phone or at a Verizon Wireless retail store?

You get a choice of area code and prefix. Last 4 are auto generated by their system. They dont even know it until its generated and assigned.

When I've been with people and they sign up, regardless of wireless or land line, regardless of carrier, if they are in store, the system will spit back available numbers and you choose which one you want.

Also, when thinking about numbers, remember that the 1 used to be for Q and Z.

I spotted this sweater online but it has the wrong letters for 7-8-9. I guess there's been some inconsistency about that.

If you go into a Verizon corp or att corp store, they will show you the list of the last 4 numbers available for a particular area code and prefix. You can have your pick.

Kinda off-topic, but I have always found it rather funny that in order to type MOM on a phone keypad you have to press 666. More on-topic - when my parents, both die-hard native NYers, moved in 2002, they were given a number that ended in 0911.
