I had a vasectomy about 3 years ago after the birth of my second child. No problems and no worries. Sure it's uncomfortable just because of the nature of the surgery, but I didn't have any pain and recovered in a couple of weeks.

Jessica, I'm in my mid 30's, live in the Dallas area, and will celebrate my 10 year wedding anniversary this October.

Several of my friends have had the procedure as well and only one of us had a difficult time. I think it really all depends on how you respond to the operative pain killers and how your doc handles this part of the process. For my friend that had difficulty, one side went fine, but the other didn't seem to be fully numbed all the way. According to him it felt like a jolt of lightening and when the doc realized he still had some sensation they immediately applied more anesthetic. Despite his experience he will tell you it's one of the best decision he's ever made. Taking that worry off of your mind is an amazing relief.

You must be rail thin to be standing behind me at this very moment. If you are, please don't knock my baseball bat off the wall or I'll be sad.

You've been voted off the island then. Carry on. :p

Kids, I was kidding though. Well kinda. :D :D

They're not all the same

Anybody here ever get one? Regrets? Problems?

7 years later, absolutely no regrets. Seek out a Dr. who performs the non-surgical ( or Chinese) method. Read up on the methods, research the doctors in your area, and make sure you are ready for this- they say it's reversible, but they can't guarantee it, and it will cost you a significant amount of your money (up to $3,000), versus the co-pay your procedure will likely cost.

Be smart!

I got mine snipped about 12 years ago, just after the birth of my daughter. It was an easy, piece-of-cake procedure with no pain and no complications. My wife and I have never regretted it for a moment; she doesn't have to use any birth control anymore and we can be as spontaneous as we want.

As for a real cautionary tale: My brother-in-law was scheduled to get a vasectomy and about a week before the procedure he got his wife pregnant. They now have two kids in high school...and a 5-year-old.

I had it done about 25 years ago. I didn't want children, and it made everything easier for my wife (at the time) and I.

No problems, minimal discomfort...very happy I had it done.:D

EDIT: I just read (well, skimmed) the craiglist essay. Just one man's experience...not similar to my own. My was easy, fast, and with little discomfort during or after surgery.

More than 10 years ago, West Coast of Canada, and unfortunately for you ... happily married....

I had forgotten that there was the "old" way of being fixed. My specialist was using the new way quite early on. Small incision (no stitches) so only a local required. In fact, I think he used a spray on type, so no needles... but I could be wrong. Room was well ventilated...so no smells other than the usual hospital ones. The best part was walking out the door and being able to pick out the next fellow in line, in the crowd in the waiting room. There just was that certain - 'look'...

No thanks, I don't like sharp objects near my nutsack, much less in my nutsack.

What's that quote about courage, eh? Something like the mark of courage is not that aren't afraid - but that being afraid you go ahead and do it anyway? Is that about right?

My urologist tried to convince me to get a general, even though the surgery was a simple as yours. His point: he's had a lot of guys get sick to their stomachs, and even try to "help" (never a good idea!) because they panic due to the tugging sensation. I opted for the local anyway, and stayed perfectly calm, except...

...See, my body metabolizes things really, really quickly. Including locals. And I had no idea of that. Soooo... about half way through the surgery, my liver got done processing the local and...

..I... felt... everything.

There was nothing I nor he could do, so I just grimaced and tried like hell to ignore the pain.

This isn't meant to scare men away from a Vas. It's far, far more safe to do than having your lady get herself cut open, if you're considering surgery to sterilize yourself. Just: consider a general. :)

Conveniently done

I had to have surgery to repair an inguinal hernia, which is pretty much in the same neighborhood, so I asked if while they were down there they could take care of it. Urologist scrubbed in and did the deed, I was under a general anesthetic and the recovery from the hernia wasn't exactly pain free, but came with some very nice pain meds, so I felt zero discomfort in relation to the vasectomy...

Going by that Craigslist posting if your only option is Novocaine I'd never do it. For some people Novocaine works great for others it is nearly useless. I have had enough teeth drilled and one pulled to know that Novocaine is nearly useless for me. It takes nearly twice the amount for only a mild numbing effect so I still feel a lot of sharp pain when getting the work done. They also need to work fast once I do get some mild numbing it will only be ten or fifteen minutes until it wears off.

...puncture, … , snip, clip, burn the ends, and presto, your done.

I'm sorry, but words like "snip, clip" and "burn" should never, ever, ever be in the same sentence or paragraph as a discussion of one's genitals.

I have no objections to vasectomies in general. I'm gay, so it's really not an issue for me. No one is going to get pregnant short of an act of God or aliens. However, that said, no one is getting near the family jewels with anything sharp or that snips, clips or burns. ;)

Don't people talk to their doctors? When I had a cataract out, it turned out I needed more local during the procedure. I told them, and they just upped the dosage. When I had a another minor procedure a few years later, I simply told the doctor of my earlier experience - who made a note on the chart - and I was fine. You know... they actually spend a great deal of time learning how to do these things to make life as easy as possible for you...

It actually isn't quite that simple with a vasectomy. The local takes a bit of time to activate, and he can't just stop what he's doing and wait for that. Good idea, just not applicable here.

jas

Maybe not once the procedure has started, but they can adjust dosages based on past history - if the patient tells the doctor ahead of time.

Had mine on a local about 5 years ago. Reason's as follows. I have one daughter and didn't want any more. Didn't want my wife going through a more invasive procedure. None of the other options are 100%.
So to be honest its uncomfortable rather than painful during the procedure. I wasn't used to having 5 people stand around looking at my meat and two veg.
I was really nervous but when the doctor told me it was his first time as well, i felt much better!
The part I remember the most was walking back into the waiting room (as I was the first of the session) and the other 6 blokes looking at me with absolute fear. I wish I'd had the balls (pun intended) to stagger in clutching them and scream my head off. I reckon I would have cleared the room. According to the nurse they get about 1 no show or leave before its done a week.

FYI, I got one a few years ago. Best thing I ever did. I have two kids, don't want any more; so I went off, got snipped and man has it changed. Why? Well, my wife stopped taking her pill and it changed her completely. Turns out the drug changed her moods, her personality, and her sexual desire. After this, all went back to her younger years and it's been tons of fun since.

Was it LIke that post that's linked to above?

BTW, no not at all like this for me. Sure you felt everything, but the worst part was lying on the table with your junk hanging out for everyone to see. At the time I twitted my entire procedure.
