I don't quite understand why people do not get an Intel X25-M as their boot drive if they are concerned about performance. Well, disregarding the initial high cost of course ;)

I do understand - regarding the costs ;)

Well apart from the fact its tiny, I need to dual boot windows and its twice the expense of a Veloci, I stuck with the old tech :p

Its quick, but not as quick as a SSD.

And anyway, in a years time when I come to replace it, SSDs will be 300Gb, much quicker and much cheaper, so i'll stick with HDs for now ;)

I have to admit that the Random Write Speed and latency of the Intel X25-M totally won me over. Velociraptor gets around 1.63MB/s in the 4K Random Write Speed while the X25-M achieves 39.3MB/s. A latency at 0.3 ms is the worst case scenario for the Intel X25-M, while the Velociraptor sits at 7.2 ms. Applications will respond, load and generally feel quicker and thereby giving me a much better computing experience :)

I can have my applications inside the meager 80GB of space (CS4, Final Cut Studio 2 and various other applications). I also have a fast scratch drive for storage as well as external storage for ordinary junk.

The Velociraptor were $300 when it were announced but bleeding edge have rarely come cheap.

But the Velociraptor is still considered the fastest desktop (mechanic) harddrive :)

From another post that I read earlier on the forum, someone said that the Velociraptor won't work in RAID ?

Is that true? I was planning on getting 2 or 3 of these baby and to a software RAID 0 for my photoshop scratch disk... should I forget about it?

I'm curious, from which online store in Europe can you get the velociraptor for 144€?

I am running 3 x WD VelociRaptor as RAID 0 stripe in my 09 Mac Pro for my user files. No problems at all, performance is great :D
