RAID0 almost doubles your throughput, 10K RPM improves the access times. SSDs are very, very fast for access time but lousy for writes for the money you are paying especially with MLC - a 512MB Mac RAID card will help here to some extent but these are a little too new to be making any decisions on. SSDs make good system drives.

Of course there are the RamSan and Fusion-io products if you have $18K burning a hole in your pocket

Do you know if the Caviar Black 1TB drive is as good (1E15) and as fast as the Caviar Black 640GB? I have 2 of the 1TB drives lying around, could just as well raid them. I know the Caviar Black 500GB was not rated as good, so wondering if the TB Black is more on line with the 640. If this makes sense. It sure is nice to have knowledgeable people to ask questions to.

Tomshardware.com and storagereview have a bunch of comparison tests for all kinds of drives; in general the 1TB Black seems to test a tad faster than the 640GB Black, which is a bit faster than the 640 Blue, and the 500GB Black being a little slower than the latter one.

That said, I have run my system on the stock 320 Blue, 500 Black, 640 Black single, 640 Black 2x in Raid0, and a single Velociraptor.

The only noticable speed difference I experienced with the VC or the Raid0 .
