Verify Permissions Hang

When I try to verify my permissions, it get about 25% through and hangs
any ideas?

It takes a VERY long time. Let it run and don't trust the time remaining b.s.

My MBP & Air take forever but it does get done. When I got my Air, I posted same question here and got same answer.... I swore it was frozen.

Five minutes (about)

My girlfriend just bought a MacBook Pro, I think 200 MB drive, just the pre-loaded stuff, and it took about 5-8 mins. Said "1 minute left" most of that time. As posted above, it seems to hang on 25%.

On my MacBook Pro bought last year with 160 GB disk mostly full, takes about the same amount of time I think.

I recently upgraded from Tiger to Leopard and I could swear my permissions verify times have doubled. On my MacBook it now takes about twenty minutes to complete verify permissions.

Any thoughts on maintenance or optimizations I can do to speed verify permissions up a bit?
