Verizon 4.2.8 to ios5?

I'm on 4.2.8 and never upgraded to the latest version as I wanted to keep my jailbreak.

Question is: do I need to upgrade to the most current version before making the plunge into iOS 5?

Or is it okay to jump from 4.2.8 to ios5?
