Verizon Activation with Visa Gift Card?

I tried to activate my iPad with a visa gift card and got a message saying that the activation failed along with an email from vzw saying the payment was declined. The balance on the card is sufficient for the data plan I am trying to purchase. Can you use a gift card to activate it?

Nope, they aren't "real" cards...
Because if you go over your data plan and no more balance, they can't charge you...

Is the card for the exact amount of the price? If so, it might be doing a $1 preauthorization then charging the real amount, so the real one got declined because of the pending clearing of the preauthorization.

It would be a whole lot easier calling Verizon. My guess is that they only take *real* credit cards or debit cards.
