Verizon has introduced two new prepaid data plans with 5GB for $50 per month and 10GB for $70 per month. Both plans include unlimited talk and text in the United States, Always-On Data, Carryover Data, Mobile Hotspot for 4G LTE tethering, and messaging to more than 200 countries at no additional cost.

Carryover Data allows Verizon customers to keep their unused data for an additional month. The feature automatically rolls your unused data for one month into the next. If you have 1GB of unused data remaining in November, for example, it would be added on top of your regular December data bucket.

Always-On Data provides unlimited data at up to 128 kbps speeds at no additional charge when a customer meets their monthly limit for high-speed data.

The 10GB plan also includes unlimited calling to Mexico and Canada.

The new tiers accompany Verizon's existing prepaid plans, including 6GB of data for $60 per month, 3GB of data for $45 per month, and Wi-Fi only for $30 per month.

Verizon's Prepaid Plans
  • Wi-Fi only: $30/month
    3GB: $45/month
    New — 5GB: $50/month
    6GB: $60/month
    New — 10GB: $70/month
All prices require signing up for automatic payments with Verizon.

Verizon's postpaid data plans, by comparison, include 2GB for $35/month, 4GB for $50/month, 8GB for $70/month, 16GB for $90/month, and 24GB for $110/month. Each plan includes unlimited talk and text in the United States.

Verizon customers can review and make changes to their account using the revamped My Verizon app, available as a free download on the App Store [Direct Link].

Wow, that's surprisingly not terrible. I'm expecting the other shoe to drop soon, but until then, good job Verizon!

EDIT: Note that Verizon postpaid also tack on a $20/phone monthly charge in addition to the cost of the data plan. Prepaid plans do not, which is what makes this a good deal.

I agree with you, PR. I'm not a fan of any of the U.S. cellular carriers. But that 5 GB plan seems like a real sweet spot for someone who doesn't stream video.

$600/yr for cellular service and Apple's yearly upgrade plan would be pretty decent set-up.

Why would anyone pay for wifi only? Are they actually so terrible to deal with that people would pay to not use their network?

Someone wants to have cellular service for calls (and texting), and can just use data when they are on WiFi, if needed?

You still have to have *post-paid* service with one of the 4 major carriers to enroll in the iPhone upgrade. However, you could do the iPhone installment plan (no AppleCare+ and no annual upgrades).

It does not make much sense to keep the 3GB plan at $45 if 5GB is $50... Hopefully, the former also gets reduced soon.

Well, I guess you can say it makes $5/month sense if you are never really even close to 3GB of usage.

This is actually really good. I currently pay $65 for unlimited with cricket (ATT). It's capped at 8gbps, but that's never been an issue.

Out of curiosity, does the wifi-only plan at least come with always-on 128kbps data?

Verizon's website is really outdated. Assuming they will update it to reflect these new plans but the existing ones aren't even reflected. Probably my biggest complaint with Verizon, and other providers, is how poorly their websites enable a customer to just price compare between plans.

Terabytes of unlimited* data.

*All media is compressed to look as ****** as possible.
No, it's not. I think that might be with the T Mobile One plan. But regular T Mobile plan, I mean it's the fountain of fresh flowing data. They're taking us to the data. Now I can't drink it for you. You're gonna have to drink it for yourself.

That's because it's not available until Nov 13th.

I've found this criticism is only flung at T-Mobile by people who don't actually have T-Mobile. People who do tend to love it, because 480p looks pretty good on a ~5" phone screen and they'd rather watch the video than worry about data limits. Think I've run into like two customers who chose to deactivate Binge On as a T-Mobile rep.

Postpaid also tacks on a bunch of fees and taxes. Does prepaid include everything on Verizon? I'm currently using H2O wireless and one of the attractions is the lack of additional taxes and imaginatively worded fees that are actually cost of doing business and should be included in the monthly plan.

Huh, Verizon seems to add on that charge? Verizon's website (here) says there's a $xx access fee, under "Data Device Plan." I'm confused. Does that mean if I get the 3GB plan for $45, that's all I pay? Nothing more than that (except for taxes)?

It mostly has the same features. I think VM transcription is an extra $2 or $3/month.

As far as my experience has been, all the providers charge a "smartphone access fee" on postpaid plans. With a prepaid you can expect a few $ in taxes/fees but that's it.

The T in T-Mobile stands for Terabytes of unlimited data.
Good luck if you can use that much data with their sh**ty coverage. They already throttle once you get 28GB of usage. I'm referring to majority of their customers, not to a person who stays in one place all the time.
