Whats the catch?

Not necessarily a "catch" but the deal requires you to sign up for Verizon’s top tier Unlimited Ultimate plan, trade in an unlocked phone, and stay with Verizon for three years (trade credits are spread over 36 months) to get the full credit. Fairly typical for these types of offers.

Nah, it doesn’t have to be unlocked. It doesn’t even have to be working.

The catch is pretty big though: $90+taxes per month for 36 months or $3,240. A bit lower if adding a line to family plan.

You can get the same quality of service from Visible+ $45 plan which is currently on promo for $35/mo (no int’l roaming perks though).

Then people will sell their iphone 12 or 13PM outright for $600+, buy an old iphone on eBay for $29 and trade it in instead. What’s the catch with “Select Trade-In” ?

One of the general terms and conditions regarding device trade-ins at Verizon is that a phone be unlocked. Another is that it's not on a lost/stolen list.

The Unlimited Ultimate plan is pricey, yes.

It doesn't need to be SIM unlocked but they do require that there's no iCloud activation lock.

Excludes phones with activation lock turned on, unidentifiable device model or on Lost/Stolen list.

I was referring to other conditions under Verizon's "Device Trade-In Program Terms & Conditions", one of which states that a customer won't be eligible to receive trade-in credits if their device is not unlocked. Perhaps Verizon waives some of those other conditions for this promotion?

Take a calculator, 10 minutes and do the maths

It’s really not complicated, a middle schooler could do it

Numbers to consider:

$$ saved on the iPhone 15 pro

Price of the plan that you have to get for that offer

Months locked in

Cheaper plan you could get anywhere according to your needs

Do the maths and you’ll see if you come out positive or not and if it’s worth it

Usually it’s not. But depending on your own situation (if you need a huge plan no matter what and/or if only that particular carrier is usable in your area etc etc) it could be worth it

We can’t do it for you, you’re an adult now :D

I checked their T&Cs and I think Verizon's definition of unlocked at least as it pertains to trade ins is different from yours.

Note that it doesn't say it has to be SIM unlocked or open line. Just that Find My iPhone / Kill Switch is disabled.
