I wish there were better deals for those of us who prefer to buy our phones outright so we can jump around to other carriers. I guess that's the point though, lock you in.

Verizon iPhones are unlocked. Get them and then bring them anywhere. As long as you pay off your device, it’s yours!

Meh. I traded in my 6s for a 7 for $650 credit and my monthly payment has been $4.

The X looks like a great phone, but does it beat my perfectly capable 7 at $4/mo?

Nope.

I did the same thing. Went from 6 to 7+. Costs me $10 bucks a month.

Technically not for existing customers if you have to add a line
I was thinking the exact same thing as well.

It's like a contract almost.

Exactly. It’s the new version of a phone subsidy. You have to stay with Verizon for the full 24 months to get the benefit less than 50% off each phone.

I say less than 50% because you have to trade in a working phone from an approved list AND the monthly credit only covers an iPhone 8 64GB model.

If you want a different model of iPhone you have to pay the difference.

Still, it isn’t a bad deal if you planning on staying with Verizon for the next 24 months and you want a new iPhone. If I was on Verizon, I would call up and ask for the same deal even if I was already on an XL or Unlinited plan. I imagine they would offer the same deal to loyal customers.

Right... but we are not 'adding a line'. We would be switching from an XL Plan to Unlimited. I've almost switched before, but a BOGO phone deal would seal the deal. I'm just not sure if upgrading from an XL to an Unlimited would qualify.

EDIT : It would only cost us $10 a month to switch to Unlimited and we often run out of data. So it's a deal for us if the BOGO qualifies.

You would not qualify. You need a new line and unlimited to qualify regardless of what plan you have now.

The $650 trade-in credit spread out over 2 years worked for me because I usually keep my phone for 3 years, but the 650 credit was comparable to what I could have gotten for my 2-year old iPhone 6 via sale or trade...definitely more than I would have gotten for it in another year when it was 3 years old. Plus I knew I had no intention to switch carriers anyway - not out of love for Verizon, but just because the other carriers have lackluster coverage in the rural areas where I live. It is pretty much Verizon or nothing. So overall, rating it 5/7 would do again on the same terms.

I'm curious tho... we are not on the unlimited but are Verizon customers. If we switch to unlimited I wonder if the offer works for us. It's not a bad deal if you like Verizon.

You still would have to add a line (or, perhaps, drop one and sign up for a new one).

Requiring a new line really limits the usefulness of this for existing customers.

Afterwards, the $699 discount on the second smartphone comes in the form of bill credits spread out over a 24 month period.

Um, no, Homey don't play that.

That was last year promo (Sept 2016 promo) when everyone was copying T-Mobile very generous trade in 2 year old iPhone 6 16gb for $650 credit for iPhone 7.

It’s a new year and promos are less generous.

Carriers (att/Verizon/sprint) reported spendings way too much money trying to copy T-Mobile

Between my wife and me we have 2 Verizon lines both with their contracts fulfilled. So, I guess it would be possible to take this deal with one of the lines, get the new line and then give up our current 2nd line. The result would be that we’d be able to get the free phone and still end up with only 2 lines.

Was thinking of doing the same. Would we port a current number to the new line? Then drop the old line? Confusing. Going to th Verizon store on Monday to figure this out.

They were very clever with that last trade-in deal splitting the rebate over 24 months to prevent upgrades at one year.
How would that prevent upgrading at one year? Verizon allows an upgrade once 50% of the device is paid off. The 50% mark would be achieved at 12 months, allowing for upgrade. If you choose to upgrade, you simply forfeit the remaining monthly credits.

Cannot wait until Apple launches their MVNO. Being done with the wireless carrier mafia would be a dream come true.

An Apple MVNO would be great. I'd love to have one "Apple bill" for the phone and service.

But would they offer an MVNO in all 130 countries the iPhone is available in?

As good as it sounds... I just don't think that's a game Apple wants play.

It doesn’t prevent it outright, but you forfeit the remaining monthly credits if you upgrade.

BOGO must be an American thing? We call it a BOGOF in the U.K. or at least I do! it’s funnier as a bog is a toilet or stinky swamp and the OF is said Off. It’s also a polite way to say F-off.

There are no free meals, if you’re getting a phone for free there’s always a catch or lock in so they never loose money overall. This deal sounds prett smelly to me.

Indeed, but I'm actually glad. If they had not spread it out over 24 months (traded in a 6 for something crazy like $650 on a 7+) then I would have bought an X. If I had traded my 7+ for an X I would have forfeited the remaining 12 months of rebate from my iPhone 6 trade in, and, on top of that, would have had to pay off the 7+.

I must be falling off of the Apple Hype wagon. Still love their products but don't have to "HAVE IT TODAY!!!!" like I use to.

Buy your phone and a Walmart location and put it on the monthly device payment plan and then wait 30 days and pay it off. If you do that then you save around $150 to $200 on each phone
