So the 15GB/$100 plan we are currently signed up for no longer exists, to go up to the next tier would now be 16GB/$130 or 20GB for $140. Not seeing the "$10 per month" price drop...

Correct. The current/new promo is with prices dropping on the lower data plans (while the previous promo was with prices dropping on some higher data plans).

OK AT&T time for another change. What are you prepared to do?

Its Cricket BU now offers unlimited talk and text, plus 2.5 GB data, for $35. One caveat is that the data is throttled to 8 Mbps, but that's fast enough for most mobile services. After the 2.5 GB is used up, you're throttled to EDGE speeds for the rest of the billing cycle.

I switched to Cricket almost a year ago, and I'll never go back to postpaid on any carrier.

And I'll never willingly go back to being throttled to EDGE speeds. Comme si comme sa.

500MB/month would barely cover email and occasional websurfing. Why even have a smartphone?

Ask the majority of people who find a Gig or less to be sufficient. I'm one of them. I use my phone mainly for email, Facebook, navigation, music, fitness and occasionally Skype voice, and I rarely go over my 1 GB bucket. For me, a smartphone's small screen limits the types of applications I want to use it for. For example, I don't use it to watch video.

That said, I'm not surprised by all of the carriers pushing 10 GB+ plans -- or all of the wireline ops pushing Gig broadband. I'm sure that people are buying them for the same reason they buy cars that can go 130 mph even though they'll never have the opportunity to go over 75.

We have a 15GB plan -- plus an additional 2GB per month from a promotional deal -- and we went over that last month. LOL!

Because some web surfing and email and a few apps to check some things occasionally like sports or even Facebook or something similar can easily be enough for many people. Plus having a smartphone is much more than just data as far as what it offers and how it can be used (navigation, music, videos, other apps, etc.) over a feature phone which barely even exist these days anyway.
