I am hoping to reserve a phone for pickup a the Apple Store tomorrow. I currently use T Mobile (USA) but if I buy the Version phone will it be more of a 'universal' phone? Also can I purchase this phone when I am not a Verizon customer?

Thanks!

You can waltz into the store and purchase the Verizon model if they have stock. You cannot however reserve (at this time) the verizon phone without an account.

The Verizon phone IS more universal as it gives you the option to switch to Verizon or Sprint... plus it has some very very minor advantages overseas in rural areas of some countries where CDMA is still used.

Won't the sim free version be the same as the Verizon model? And you don't need an account to buy that.
