I know you only get tethering with higher data on the iPhone, but I was expecting tethering to be included in the price for the data on the iPad so the price structure is consistent with what we already know. ATT has no choice now except to follow Verizon because the average consumer does not spend a lot of time looking at where they have coverage, etc. But with ATT you never now...

Quite right - iPhone plans in the UK have been like this for years on O2 and Vodafone. The US carriers seem to be taking their iPhone customers for a bit of a ride.

I didn't realize the ipad cell plans were mo to mo. I am considering changing my order to a verizon instead of wifi only, as it would be handy now and then to be able to have 4G "on demand" for my laptop - but I am not keen on getting some kind of mifi device where I have to get into a contract as there will be plenty of months I won't use it. Any downsides other than of course having to have the ipad available and charged?

That's why I specifically think the iPad data plans are appealing. I can add it when I need it and drop it when I don't.

Someone in another thread told me that the $10 more per GB is only for post-paid plans, not prepaid plans like the iPad data plan is. Overages would be $20 instead.

I can't confirm this, and I hope it really is $10 per gb over, but I was told I was wrong to assume that.

I'm currently paying $59/month for a Verizon 3G mifi unlimited (grandfathered). But I've never used more than about 3.2GB in a month, and it's usually just under 2GB.

The Verizon 2GB plan with tethering is only $30/month and if I go over, it's $10 more per GB.

GOODBYE MIFI!

These data plans are all ridiculously expensive, unless it was absolutely needed for work I don't see how they would be worth it for most people. Having an iPhone means that there is free internet access through most wi-fi outlets at restaurants and coffee shops already. The average amount of data used by iPhones owners is under 300MB per month, it makes you wonder if there is really a reason for people to be spending $600 a year for data access on their iPads.

I agree, when the 1st gen. iPad came out I signed up for the $30.00 unlimited plan but soon realized I was almost always on wi-fi so I cancelled after about a year.

I had a hard time deciding whether to bother with the LTE iPad yesterday -$129.00 extra is a hurdle but I did go for it. I'll just get the $14.99 plan when I really need it such as a road trip so I'll probably keep my annual cost below $75.00

ATT is obviously waiting for after the 16th to drop the news of their decision. Its not going to be in our favor. There hopes are that if you have the ipad in hand and have opened it you will be less likely to return it, when you see that they are going to add 20 bucks to the plan for hotspot. I ordered the ATT version, but am really thinking about switching, its just that I don't know how well LTE works in the midwest. Time for some research!

I ordered the AT&T iPad yesterday, but after reading this news item started thinking about changing to the Verizon (I have used AT&T for my phone for years). I checked online and saw I could still cancel the AT&T iPad, but when I tried it told me I couldn't unless I cancelled the AppleCare+. Since that order was marked completed I could not cancel it, and therefore could not cancel the iPad.

Called Apple and, after less than two minutes, got through to a nice woman who was able to revise my order to a Verizon model. She did tell me, however, that I should check the AppleCare to make sure the serial numbers match my iPad (I guess because the AppleCare order as marked completed and had already been assigned to an AT&T iPad). I received an email confirmation of the change and also was told it would be delivered by the 16th.

Hopefully I made the right choice. I'm in NYC so LTE coverage should not really be an issue and I only order a month's service at a time (only maybe four months a year). What sold me on changing was the 1 GB for $20 plan (which is soooo much better than 250MB for $15) and the free mobile hotspot option. I'm pretty sure AT&T is not going to match that...

Went ahead and ordered a Verizon 32gb to supplement my wifi only order. Have a week to decide what to do!

You can always cancel it and order a Verizon model. That's what I did. They are still scheduled for delivery 3/16/12.

According to Apple's order page, I can't cancel...might have something to do with the fact that I'm having it engraved? It's already listed as prepared for shipment.

That's what I did, too, and I'm also in NYC, though I didn't order AppleCare+ and so didn't have the issue you ran into. I had been looking forward to a preview of the reliability of the upcoming LTE iPhone on AT&T (I have the iPhone 4S, and can attest as to how unreliable data and sometimes even voice is in Midtown between 9:00-6:00), but in the end it's better for me to have the 1GB plan and to know that hotspot will work (rather than see if AT&T offers it).

I have heard that since AT&T's LTE network is newer in NYC, there is less traffic and so speeds are faster, but Verizon's LTE should be pretty speedy, and it has better coverage overall. In any case, I'm looking forward to it. Ironically, I may be taking my Verizon iPad to the office and using hotspot so that my AT&T iPhone can receive e-mails during the day. I do that with my T-Mobile Nexus One right now. If it works, I'll probably ditch T-Mobile.

Tethering on iPad?

I jail broke my iPad 2 just so I could tether- has it been enabled in iOS 5.1?

Where are you located AJH1993?

I own a Verizon LTE device. Is 12-42mbps good enough?

I (personally) would like to hear from people in the Mid-Atlantic area - I'm in Washington DC & frequently in MD and VA. I'm waiting for benchmarking tests of the "new iPad" vs the iPad2 and comparison with the new iPad on AT&T and Verizon. I know the latter has more 4G coverage, but there are areas where AT&T does and I'd like to know how well it works. I've had 3 iPhones (2G, 3GS and 4S) on AT&T and the iPad2 and I'm pretty satisfied with them. Their CS is very responsive. Verizon provides my LAN line service and I find their CS very poor. I'm waiting for more data, benchmarking etc. before I decide if I can live without the new iPad. The screen and the photo apps are real draws, so is the faster processor and the 4G capability. I'm pretty weak (wheelchair user) and find my iPad2 heavy enough so I'm less enthusiastic about it's being even slightly heavier and thicker - although the reasons why it is so are clear.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9B5141a Safari/7534.48.3)

That 1 gb plan I'd nice, can't wait to get it.

That's why I never engrave electronics. That makes then non-returnable (just exchangeable if there is a defect).

one thing that no one has mentioned....the att data plan for ipad is month to month. you can cancel and sign back up at any time. doesn't the verizon plan have a fee or other stipulation so you cant do that? that's the way it was i thought?

Suprised!

Suprised?
I think this is great! I thought for sure that the king of rip-off, Verizon (not saying their network isn't great!) but never expected it to be included! I say, good job Verizon.

So, I'm also considering cancelling my ATT pre-order and going w/ a VZW, but I'm confused by the coverage maps:

On VZW, they have:
- 4G LTE Coverage Area *
- 4G LTE Extended Coverage Area **

ATT has:
- 4G, DataConnect Pass
- Mobile Broadband , DataConnect Pass

What's up w/ the Extended Coverage Area on VZW? Is Mobile Broadband on ATT the same as regular 3G?

I'm in the darkest region of both, but still trying to figure out what the hell to do here. The carriers really should have had this sorted out w/ Apple before yesterday, that's for sure. I might just pre-order the VZW one and keep both on track to ship until the last minute.

Verizon's 4G LTE Extended Coverage area just means that there are times when the signal might be a bit weak and you will be shifted back to 3G. Basically they guarantee coverage in a 4G LTE Coverage Area, but your results might be mixed once you move into the Extended Coverage area.

Someone justify the high data plan cost for me :\ -with a smartphone plan already.

This.

I can't for the life of me understand the number of people who are willing to take on this additional cost. Maybe its because its not recurring and you can get it only when you need it - but are you really without wifi enough to warrant paying the extra money for access?

To each his own, I know that's why there are choices but still - it seems totally excessive when people are struggling to put food on the table, keep their mortgage payments current, and fight for job stability.

But if you want to spend your money on a data plan for an ipad by all means go right ahead.

Did the Verizon CEO say we were going to be able to combine data plans between devices very soon?
Getting 5GB for $50 between your iphone and ipad would be great. If you could family plan your 5/$50 that would be even better.

I'll take a stab at it. I'm 38 and own a software company and I'm neck deep in crappy smartphones. I've been sitting on two personal smart phones that have both been eligible for upgrade since August of last year with Verizon but there is absolutely nothing on the market that seems worth commiting to a two year contract. Blackberry...hold out for Blackberry 10. Android...new phones are still being released with Gingerbread. iPhone 4S...hmmm...kind of underwhelming from the 4(similar to Intel's tick/tock cpu implementation schedule). September and maybe the next iPhone. The wireless companies are just laughing as they rake us over hot coals with their data plans. All for shareholder value ehh...my arse!

I'd be willing to drop my current smart phones, pick up a no-nonsense feature phone for 6-12 months and use the iPad with the mobile plan and hotspot. Stick a VOIP client on it and connect any of my other devices to it, usually 3 laptops when I'm on the road. The monthly bill is not a problem for me, it's the abuse of the network carriers that really irks me.

I'm waiting for shared data plans but "it takes time" according to Verizon/AT&T...yeah shifting those bits around is difficult and hard for the Controller to verify the accounting is correct. This hotspot news is a breath of fresh air.

I absolutely love technology and my life and company depend on it. But we're just in a pretty sad state with the mobile solutions at the moment.

And an addendum...as someone with elderly parents who have used Macs since 1985, smart phones are too much for them and too small to be of use. An iPad with the mobile data plan can be a modern "smart" phone that a small 3.5-4.5 inch device can never be.
