So what exactly does this mean with those of us on the old Nationwide plans? Currently have five lines 2 iPhones with unlimited data, 1 iPhone with 2gb and two dumb phones and only pay 240. The two iPhones get new phones each year by using he upgrades of the other lines and have been doing this since the first iPhone came to Verizon. Does this mean I'm **** out of luck now with getting them at $200?

Verizon actually doing something good for customers? I'm shocked.

I think the masses are finally finding out how much they're getting ripped off by subsidized phones.

They're pricing it that way so people will get the $45 a month deal. This practice isn't new. Still a deal coming from previous Verizon plans.

$50. Smart phones are $20 per line on top of the data.

What this article doesn't mention is that depending on the data plan you choose you get a discount on your phone financing. My girlfriend just got an iPhone 6 when this new model and will be paying about $6 a month for her 64Gb phone. A total of just about $150 for a phone that would have been $300 subsidized.

What the hell. I pay £12 a month (monthly, no contract) for unlimited 4G data here in the UK. Those prices seem absolutely obscene.

The US carriers must make obscene profits... the prices US customers pay for their phone service is astronomical. I don't think they realise how much cheaper it is everywhere else.

Verizon does have amazing coverage, but they're so high.

My bill is $160 a months for 4GB of data, two iPhones, and one dumb phone.

As far as I know, customers will still be able to do 2-year contracts, they just won't be proactively offered.

Be thankful you're in an area where T-Mob works consistently. Not being a smart ass either...the way this industry has and always will work is that if the network sucks (on a national level I mean) you'll get a ton for your money.....where it happens to work.

That's exactly why Verizon gets away with their pricing scheme - their network is almost everywhere. Which is why while I have a T-Mobile phone, when I got an iPad I bought one on Verizon's network for "emergencies".

Now here in the Puget Sound region of Washington state, all three big networks seem to have the same weak spots (I've been with them all) - so I'm a happy T-Mobile customer. But when we visit my farmer in-laws over in the far northeast corner of the state, that Verizon iPad gives us (mediocre) data coverage if we want it.

This was a long time in coming. So many people didn't understand the "subsidized" pricing model and continued to use their smartphones after 24 months not realizing they were continuing to pay for subsidies with no benefit. Not all, but many, I'm sure.

Better to break out the phone and service costs separately, which allows consumers to see the differences and be more informed shoppers.

This is not true. I have a single line and a subsidized price allows me to have the phone at a discount. If I pay for a phone full price over 24 months I will be paying more per month.

Am I doing the math right on this?

$80 for 12Gbs
$40 for 2 smart phones

$120? That's not bad compared to my current $180 (granted that's got the cost of two phones in the price).

What's with the $5 for a smart watch? That's pretty bogus.

I was already looking at Tmobile and their plans were tempting. We were on it previously but I got tired of waiting on the iPhone and switched to Verizon. Service has been good but 12gb is not enough for our family, we need at least 20 gb for 4 phones. We will move now pretty much no matter what.

I wanted to laugh at these prices because of how bad they are, but instead I'm just crying because my current plan is AT&T is worse.

Right now for my plan I'm charged:

$70 for my data (Verizon would only charge $60)
$25 per line to access the data (Verizon would only charge $20)
Plus $5.46 per line for Surcharges, Taxes, and Fees (I assume Verizon has the same fees)

So I'm paying $130.92/month for just my plan.
Swapping to Verizon would save me $20/month.

The US carriers do make large profits but they also have considerably higher costs associated with the infrastructure. We live in a huge country. I paid something like $35/mo for 2GB iPhone in Sweden. Here in Northern California I pay $155/mo for 4GB shared across 2 iPhones and 1 iPad with Verizon. Unfortunately, it is the only carrier with coverage outside of the few major towns. If I could pay less and have a phone I wood.
PS, I've never signed a contract and always bring my own devices.

The timing of AT&T and Verizon are laughable. Changing everything they can to benefit them before the newer iPhone is released.

I really hope that rumor is true, that 5 years from now Apple will start their own network.

I'm still on a grandfathered unlimited plan with AT&T. Now that I'm married,I was looking into getting a family plan with my wife. But the amount of data they give for the price is just absurd.

Individually I could see it saving money. But most people do family plans which it wouldn't save them money.

I haven't read this article yet. This is a pre-cringe notice. I for one prefer the subsidized method. To each their own I guess.
Just so you and I are on the same page here; You do understand you are paying full retail price for your subsided phone, right? A 2-year contract doesn't get you any actual discount. Like a magic trick, it certainly has the illusion of being absolutely real. But, the carrier subsidy like the magic trick, isn't real.

As long as you understand that then I have no problem with you preferring a 2-year contract.

It does, and I have wifi everywhere, gym work home Starbucks. Not only that, free music streaming and international roaming.
way to rub it in why don't you!

Im kidding lol. I wish we had coverage here. their data speeds are awesome. almost 70Mbs is what I got during my test drive, where they had coverage around town of course.

Well I realized that I won't be affected that much. Paying $131 for two $40 access fees plus $60 for 4GB will turn into $111 for two $20 access fees plus $80 for 12GB, so that's really a win for me. Plus I can still finance a new iPhone and pay only $6 more than I am now.

Edit: I get a small gov discount so that's why the amounts wouldn't add up if you checked

Here's a breakdown of different data and different number of lines. For anything over 6GB and 2 lines, this will actually cost more ($5/line/month)

Still on an old nationwide plan here as well with one line that has unlimited and 4 other lines with 2GB of data... I assume our contracts will eventually expire and we'll go month to month, but no idea how long that will last.

I'm not defending Verizon, but I hate when people say "My <insert European country> offers x for y". People get it, your wireless service is cheap. Look at the size of your country though and consider that as one factor. Look at the size of the Verizon or AT&T network. Apples to oranges.

Unlimited data ftw.

This is a step in the right direction, but their pricing is still ridiculous.
