Yep, as long as there's not too much background noise, I don't have a problem hearing the other person and they hear me.
But seriously, don't get a three or four year old phone for your first smartphone. Call quality should be fine, but you may experience slowness with data speeds and low battery life. If you can, is really recommend getting an iPhone 5s instead.
