I received my new X yesterday and chose to activate later. Does anyone know if I take my sim out of my old 6S and put it in my new X, will I still have to activate the phone? I guess what I’m getting at is will they know I activated the new phone and charge me the $30 activation fee if I don’t use the sim that came with the X. The new phone is on the Verizon IUP program

When I signed up and choose activate later. I tried putting in my old sim, didn't work for me so I just activated with the sim card it came with.

Same thing happened to me. I tried to swap sim cards today and it still wanted me to activate the phone so apparently Verizon and Apple have implemented some type of hardware that doesn’t allow you to bypass the activation process. This isn’t the case on the sim free version so it must only effect the phones tied to IUP

It's not just IUP, This also includes DPP and also buying full price at apple.com (especially when entering the carrier info was a requirement). When I did an in-store pick up for the Verizon model on 11/4/17, I paid full price for it and still had me enter those info again when I turned on my phone. It wouldn't allow me to just swap SIM.

I guess Verizon wants their $30 for activation

I don't know about you but I was never charged the activation fee when I did the IUP. It's been past 3 months now since my 8 Plus is on IUP and not a single $30 bucks I can see from my billing statement. This same thing happened to me last year too, no activation fee for some reason.

I hope you’re right. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

I bought a new 8, sim free about 5 Dec. When I got home i put the sim from my 6S into the brand new 8. The new 8 activated all on its own. No fee incurred.
I am not on IUP

I was on the fence purchasing outright sim free. The main reason was to avoid the activation fee. I’ve been Verizon customer for 25yrs so I may just ask them to waive the fee if they charge me. I know many have tried and failed but, it never hurts to try

I've actually done it a couple of times between my 6S and my SE as well as the new 8. (Returned the 8)

Not trying to be rude with this comment, but sometimes it amazes me how people are willing to spend $100s to a $1000+ for a phone but try to avoid a $30 activation fee. Come on people!

Agreed.. I had a few people say the same and it does seem ridiculous. I’ll pay the $30 if I have to but, when you think of what is involved in switching phones it hardly seems like $30 is necessary. If it was $10 I’d be fine with it but, $30 just to switch to a new phone? If I purchased sim free outright and stuck my old sim card into the new phone I get charged $0..

Yeah I understand how it seems ridiculous, and I’m sure to most people it is, including myself, but I also know it could be a lot worse, like $100 or whatever. Back when subsidized pricing existed when eligible to upgrade to a new phone, $30 seemed worse to me then because most of the time I was paying $200 for a new iPhone with a two year contract and $30 was close to a quarter of what I was already paying for the phone, but now having to pay retail or installment plans that may eventually add up to those retail prices or close to it depending on how long you keep the phone before upgrading to another one, I’m already spending WELL over $200, so it’s like, “here have another $30, why not!?” Btw I’m on AT&T not Verizon but to get back on track and help you with your OP, I’m currently on my second year with the IUP going from a 6 Plus to a 7, and now to the X, and haven’t had to pay any activation fees. That’s also with using the new sims that came with the phones.

Right? Put your current sim in the new phone, before turning it on to activate it. No activation fee. Unless, i'm missing something?

I tried to swap sims and the new phone still prompted me to activate.. I then put the original sim back in my 6S and it worked perfectly with no promt to activate. It must be something in the phone that tells the network it hasn’t been activated. This is a Verizon IUP phone not sim free. Sim free you can swap sims and Verizon never knows the difference
