“i’m not a number! i’m a free man!”
srsly, phone numbers are/were a bridge that enabled automating telephony exchanges. they need to go sooner or later, for the same reason you’re not entering ipv6 addresses into your browser.

I really need this feature right now. Spent half the morning looking at shady second line apps so I can firewall my main number from what I fear will be a marketing onslaught from a set of calls I need to make.

This is enough to make me consider switching to Verizon...

Google voice. Then forward calls to whatever your personal private number is.

Given the way that all carriers recycle numbers, not sure I’d want to have five lines. Paying $15/month/line to get someone else’s debt collection calls isn’t a great bargain.

Still cant have two WhatsApp or iMessages Open. Which to me is really what Numbers are being used for these days. Calling has been very rare.

T-Mobile does have their Digits service, but it’s completely useless and unreliable, at least on iOS and MacOS. Just look at the app reviews (sort by date).

I spent literally hours and hours over a week with their customer service and even the Digits team specifically, with no resolution to get the service working. I generally love T-Mobile and give them an A for effort and doing everything they could do to help me, but the people at the top need to realize Digits is not working and should be pulled.

I have always wanted the ability to have a duplicate SIM. Why? So i can have multiple phones with the same #. Why? I have multiple phones haha! In all seriousness, I would like to be able to have a SIM in lets say 3 iPhones, grab the one i want daily and use it (that easy) Next time i grab the next phone in line and so on...
I love your idea. I keep up with the newest iPhone each year but there are times I would prefer to take an older phone with me just in case it gets dropped while biking, kayaking, etc. It really would be nice to keep 2 (or more) phones in sync with each other then grab the one you want based on where you are going and/or the battery status of each phone.

I have used a second line app in the past when I was selling a car and I didn't want to put my permanent cell number in an online advertisement. The one I used (Numbers+) worked fine and was cheaper than what Verizon is offering. The minor problem was that if I didn't pick up the call when it came in, it went to my regular voice mail instead of allowing me to have a separate outgoing message for people calling about the car. Now that Verizon is offering a separate number with a separate voice mail, I will be getting a second number for my business.

You need Google Voice. It has separate voice mail.

What is a phone number? I think they’re somehow related to those rotating dial things from way back when, but I don’t know anyone still using one.

Hopefully not numbers all from former burner phones. I have a Mint / T-Mobile SIM in one of my Android phones. A year later, I still get bizarre texts and cold calls on it.

As a service this is silly, as others said, get Google Voice. Have had my GV number for years now, and it is actually an awesome (yet hardly known) service from Google.

I use Vyke in the UK to add additional phone numbers that I can use for texting/calls. Reasonable rates as well.

Google Voice/Hangouts has been doing this for free for years and it works over WIFI without a cell phone plan.

In case it's helpful to anyone else, I looked into similar options as I wanted to have a professional/work number separate from my personal number on my single phone, but also wanted to utilize a service other than Google Voice.

In the last month, I've used Sideline for multiple work calls thus far, and have also tried GoDaddy SmartLine. As a side note, I also tried Hushed, but that is similar to Burner and just seemed less "professional" as I'm not nesessarily looking for a throwaway number/service. If online dating or using Craigslist, I'd totally go with Hushed or Burner though.

In any case, Sideline is more polished than SmartLine so far, and I intend to keep using it for the foreseeable future. I find it pricey at $8.33/mo, but seeing the Verizon $15/mo makes me feel a bit better about it now.

T-Mobile already does this...welcome Verizon to the present...

Does T-Mobile also charge you $180/year for every fake line (err, number) that you add?

Just looking at photos of this app I can already tell what a slow responding, clunky, frustrating app it would be.

What do you do on dates that requires a burner phone? Not judging, just really curious.

A phone can easily be left at school. A watch is on their wrist. Plus calling to be picked up or texting. GPS if their in trouble. I have one kids that’s autistic. That would have come in handy a few months ago. Thank god the sheriff found her first.

All joking aside, the Apple Watch won't do what you want it to do because it needs to be paired with a phone (which then also mirrors the number and notifications of said phone), and the battery life on cellular won't last long enough for you to track your kids.

When you start adding VOIP services into the mix, Google Voice is a very useful tool. I hope they never can it.

$15 simply for the privilege? No thanks Verizon.

Much prefer Apple’s eSIM idea. I shouldn’t have to pay extra for such a feature.
