I have been using the AT&T service from the day the iPad came out. I like the fact that AT&T has an unlimited data package that you can turn on and off at will.

Breitling65: Choose the provider that provides the best coverage in the areas you will use your ipad. What other people in other cities choose is kind of irrelevant since coverage can be pretty specific to an individual's patterns.

Stealthipad: How would a new user get an unlimited ipad data plan on AT&T? I thought they killed those for new subscribers last year about a month after launch?

I am confused on this as well. I am based in NYC and have Verizon, but would like the option to travel out of the country with my iPad.

If ATT is providing better coverage and speed, then go with them. If VZW is providing better coverage and speed go with them.

I said this in another thread in the iPhone forum. Given the amount of money I'm paying my carrier, I have zero brand loyalty. If VZW provides what I need for a price point that is lower then ATT. I'll switch when the time comes. As it stands for my needs. ATT is cheaper, and its service is much quicker, so I'm back with them.

Really!

As in you really should not assume why someone is asking a question. I'm grandfathered to the unlimited data plan so ATT for me. I pose the question just out of curiosity b/c it's an option not available when the original iPad launched and there has been much hullabaloo over Verizon entering the "i" world.

Im just taking my ATT unlimited sim card and popping it right into my iPad 2 when it arrives and transferring the service over, done deal.

I am hoping the grandfather statement is true. I too am grandfather in but I have a suspicion that when you pop your sim from iPad 1 to iPad 2, ATT will see this as a new device and use this opportunity to kick us off the GF plan and make us use one of the other two.

Anyone contacted ATT on this yet?

Verizon's 3G is biblically slow, but I get coverage everywhere.

AT&T's 3G is slightly faster, but coverage is far more spotty.

If I were to buy a 3G iPad, I would buy a CDMA one. LTE would be far more desirable for me.

For me, arts 3g is exponentially faster, where there's coverage. But there coverage has imoroves greatly recently so my vote is att

AT&T coverage is fine where I am and I travel outside the US so CDMA is not an option.

I'm traveling to Ireland and England later this year and plan on taking my (future) iPad. I read something that Verizon won't work in England because Verizon is CDMA. Is this accurate?

Yes, europe and most of the world uses GSM, verizon uses CDMA.

I have unlimited data with AT&T on my iPhone 4. When I buy the iPad2, will I get unlimited data on that one too? Will I keep my unlimited data on the iPhone but get the 2GB limit on the iPad2? Or will I have to give up my unlimited data on both?

I'm also considering the Verizon iPad2 since I am a current Verizon customer for my wife's phone. However, I also make periodic trips to Europe and Asia, so I'm concerned about international roaming issues.

your iPhone data plan has nothing to do with your future iPad. Your choices for it on AT&T will rsemble what anyone else can buy today -250mb or 2gb. The unlimited was offered at launch for a short time. I see you will be able to add your iPad to your iPhone bill and still go month to month.

your Verizon iPad will not work many places outside of the US, only in places that use CDMA. It will not just roam no matter if you want to pay it or not.

Sounds like you have needs for the GSM version from ATT.

Has anyone heard if with both ATT and VZ, the plans will be sans a contract? ie..both carriers will allow you to purchase service on a monthly/ as needed basis?

Aside from the contract difference, it also depends on your area of service. For me, data on at&t is much, much faster than that from verizon.

Neither for me. I'll tether from my HSPA+ T-Mobile phone. Tethering on my plan costs $15.

I'd go with whichever has better coverage in your area. You don't have to worry about statistics like dropped calls, since all you're dealing with is data. AT&T will give you higher speeds in a good coverage area that isn't overloaded with users. Verizon will give you slower top speeds but they have coverage in places AT&T doesn't.

Would travel on vacation issues come into it? The Verizon version won't work in Europe, for example.

MrWillie - one other difference is that the 3G one gains a proper GPSr, rather than using WiFi tower triangulation, I think.

Wouldn't the AT&T version be better not only for speed, but that it can be used worldwide on GSM networks?

Better is subjective based on the user's need. If you don't travel outside the US and ATT coverage sucks in your area there is no sense in buying the ATT version.
