Verizon today announced financial results for the third quarter of 2011, and as noted by AllThingsD in a live blog of the conference call following the release, the carrier revealed iPhone sales of two million units for the quarter. The number is a slight decline from the 2.3 million activations seen in the previous quarter, a 13% drop that Verizon attributed to launch timing for the iPhone 4S.
Verizon Wireless added 882,000 subscribers on contract-based plans. That was a slowdown from iPhone-fueled results earlier in the year -- Verizon started selling the coveted smartphone in February. Analysts had expected about 950,000 additions in the quarter.

Analysts were in general caught flat-footed by the effect of the delayed iPhone launch, underestimating how much people were holding back.
AT&T yesterday announced 2.7 million iPhone activations during the third quarter, still ahead of Verizon but a more significant 25% drop from its 3.6 million activations in the previous quarter.

What surprised me was the record setting opening weekend sales figures. Astonishing. Not saying the 4S isn't worthy, but I wonder how those sales figures would have looked if there was also a hardware redesign. Anyway, those numbers make all those claiming "if the hardware looks the same, it's a flop" look exactly as silly as they sounded.

More surprising is that people continue to doubt Apple at every turn. It's gotten a bit humorous. Take it or leave it: Apple has been making all the right moves. And shows no signs of slowing. It's actually quite difficult to fully appreciate in real-time. Looking back, I suspect it will seem so much more remarkable.

I think Verizon's numbers were lower since we just got the iPhone 4 within the last year and most of us are still in the midst of a 24 month contract.

I definitely can't wait to see the numbers next year, across all carriers, that comes with a redesign when a large percentage of us are at the end of our contracts.

There is much of a backlog of orders right now. The numbers wouldn't look different.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

Is it just me or does anyone else notices topics about Verizon or Sprint doesn't carry that much chatter in this site? Judging from lots of previous posts how they would switch to Verizon as soon as they get it or how much cheaper Sprint is with unlimited data, I expected a huge part of macrumors population was making a mass exodus escaping AT&T.

Why are customers still choosing AT&T?

Wow... Even with AT&T's notoriously bad service, and even when customers have a choice of carriers, AT&T still sells more iPhones than Verizon. Just exactly what more does AT&T need to do wrong to get customers to choose Verizon?

I did not know about it before that Varizon is also producing iPhones? How is their market so far and what about their sales?
