Hi,

I didn't realize it last year when I got in on the iPhone 7/7+ trade in offer from verizon that I will lose the credits on upgrade. Seems like I will lose the credits if I pay off the phone as well.

Does anyone know of any workarounds to upgrade on Verizon without losing trade in credits?

Wait for another offer with trade in credits, which they will most likely have.

Just stick with your iPhone 7/7+ for another year and then upgrade so that you get all of your credits, that is what I am doing. By then Verizon will offer a similar deal again probably so you can get a good deal then too.

1. Pay in full for new device.
2. If you have mutiple lines on the account and one of the other lines has an available upgrade, use the other line and just swap SIM cards.

They told me trade-in credit is account level, not per device. According to that, we will keep it.

Whoever told you that is wrong. Even in the fine print at the time of the deal it stated that if you get a new phone, cancel service or transfer your line, your credits will stop.

If I pay in full for the device, would verizon still deny the credits? Apple checks with Verizon even when paying in full for the device when you preorder. I hope verizon does not deny my credits even if I pay in full for the device.

It's not supposed to affect your credits unless you use Verizon's program to do an early upgrade.

The fine print from the email offer was:

*$649.99 on device payment purchase req'd. Less trade-in credit applied to account over 24 mos; credit begins in 2-3 bill cycles and ends when balance paid; 0% APR. Line must be active for 2 yrs. for full credit; trade-in must be in good working & cosmetic condition. Offer expires 9/30/2016.

Thanks for the detail. So I am guessing paying outright for the phone or using iPhone upgrade program should be ok I think.

The other question is it a bad idea to start a new IUP during preorder rush?

This was discussed thoroughly last year. They are still bill credits that you only get 100% benefit out of if you keep the phone for 2 years.

You will need to pay off this phone if they offer the same program again. Upgrading before the 2 years will cost you more than if you wait.

Same as it always been. Just in a different flavor.

Last year people had the worst luck with the Apple upgrade program. Especially since most wanted Jet black... and then fell even farther down the line.

Hopefully this year....It wont be as painful.

You may have a hard time with the current Iphone 7. I know the place that I usually sell phones to checks to see if DPP has been paid. Now if you plan to pass it to a family member.. then there will be no problem.

Technically, you don't have to keep the device itself. You just have to keep the line and original installment agreement active for the 2 year period (maybe the SIM card, too).

If you break your phone and get an out of warranty replacement or buy a new iPhone full price from Apple and just do a manual SIM swap, that doesn't terminate the agreement and end the bill credits.

That said, unless you're willing to lose the remaining credits, I wouldn't try preordering online through Apple Store even if paying full price or try to use the iPhone Upgrade Program. The online system and IUP gives you a new SIM card and I'm not sure if Verizon would void the credits because they consider that a new activation. Better safe than sorry.

The interesting thing is that if you pre-order at full price, Verizon will still charge you a $30 upgrade fee. So theoretically, Verizon will know that you have "upgraded" your line. Does this mean you will lose your credits? Not sure.

The only way to make sure this does not happen, is for you to wait for Apple to release the SIM free version of the phone. Verizon won't know you bought a new device.
