Verizon branded LTE upgrades are to be rolled out today. Anyone notice a speed bump?
I don't think I'm seeing it in Boston yet, but to be honest, because I'm in an office building, its a poor test. I have reception but not great performance.
I wonder how many markets are going to get this at launch? Can't wait.
Interesting. Its available in my (small) market already? I'll have to check it out when I get out later.
Not in lower Manhattan, NYC. Ping of 78, download 0.27 mbps and upload of 0.25 mbps. Second test shows Ping of 56, 1 mbps and 0.38. Third test shows Ping of 58, 7.72 mbps and 0.33 mbps. These are no different from last week.
I love Verizon's network and all and the data part has always been "useable". By that, I mean I've never have any issues doing what I need, but speed test in my area (next to a big city), will barely break 10Mbps. So this XLTE will just hopefully make it as fast as ATT and Tmobile?
Just ran the test, nope, just as low as before.
How does it compare to tmobile?
Nope, same old slow VZW LTE in Tallahassee.

This. At this point speed upgrades are useless as long as these meager data caps remain in place. Even at a 10GB data cap, a single user could blow through that in a mere 17 minutes at XLTE speeds. If it's a shared plan? Well, divide that time by however many people are on the plan.
That will only happen if the a users habits change as a result of the increased speed. My data usage didn't change one bit when I went from 3G to LTE, I could just perform the tasks I wanted to perform with less frustration. XLTE will be no different.
Agreed, I'll be interested when Verizon and AT&T bring back unlimited data.
Your experience is ver different from most users. Typically when data usage gets "less frustrating," there is typically an increase in data usage, as the user starts to see the faster speeds and ends up using their phone for more data intensive tasks.
That's a good point as well. AT&T/VZW increasing speeds is a moot point for the most part.
The way they list the phones that support it seems to be linked to the phones that they are selling, could the iPhone 5 perhaps support it despite not showing up on their site simply because it's no longer being sold by them?
That will be an interesting turn of events, if it happens.
It's possible, but I don't think so. I tested my daughter's 5C next to my 5 after supper and her's was twice the speed of mine (30mbps vs 14mbps)sitting right next to each other. I did notice that mine has increased though, particularly with respect to "ping". I'm assuming that with more phones accessing XLTE us with older tech have a less crowded to pipe to draw from.
Hello, If you would like to see if your phone is currently utilizing Verizon's "XLTE" network, it is quite simple to do so on your iPhone. Go to the phone app and dial "*3001#12345#*", click on "Serving Cell Info". In the list you will se "Freq Band Indicator" and a number to the right. This is the LTE band your phone is currently utilizing for data. Verizon's original LTE network is the 700Mhz LTE band 13, the new "XLTE" network is 2100/1700Mhz AWS LTE band 4. On that same page you should see "Upload Bandwidth" and "Download Bandwidth". If you are on Band 13, you should see 10Mhz up and 10Mhz down. If you are on Band 4, you may see 20Mhz up and 20Mhz down. Several Markets west of the Mississippi don't have the full 20x20 bandwidth and you may see a 10x10 or 15x15 LTE network. The more bandwidth, the more speed you will have. Thus a 10x10 network will give you a max theoretical speed of ~70Mbps while a 20x20Mhz network will give you ~140Mbps.
LTE band 4 is AWS spectrum meaning it operates on the downlink at 2100Mhz and uplink at 1700Mhz. This is a high frequency and high frequencies do not have very good in building penetration unless you are close to the cell site. You may notice that your phone will drop to LTE band 13 when you go indoors as the 700Mhz low frequency spectrum can adequately penetrate building materials to give you better service.
Here is a list of the LTE networks some US operators use today:
Verizon: 10x10 Band 13 (main band), 20x20 Band 4 (limited areas)
AT&T: 10x10 Band 17 (main band), 5x5 Band 2 (limited), 10x10 Band 4 (limited), 5x5 Band 5 (very very limited)
Sprint: 5x5 band 25 (main), 5x5 Band 26 (for in building cov.), 40Mhz TDLTE Band 41 (sprint "spark")
T-Mobile: 10x10 Band 4 (main; will be 20x20 in former MetroPCS areas after shutdown of Metro network), 5x5 Band 12 (planned to build in 2015 using 700Mhz A block purchased from Verizon recently)
I wonder why there hadn't been a carrier update to add the xlte in the status bar. I figured they would if they are touting it. Just like when 4g came out.
so tmobile already had this band set up and already using the speeds it seems.

Correct, T-Mobile is in fact using the same Band 4 LTE as is Verizon is for "XLTE". "XLTE" is just a marketing term that Verizon is using, there is nothing new or more advanced here other than the additional capacity they now have.
Something interesting I just realized is that the at&t iPhone 5 (A1428) supports band 4 while the Verizon iPhone 5 (A1429) does not. So it seems only the iPhone 5s/5c will be able access the new spectrum.
The cool thing here is that if you are a Verizon customer, you now get the best of both worlds. The "XLTE" band will give you higher data throughput due to the more bandwidth, and their main LTE band will give you better coverage due to the spectrum's in building penetration characteristics. With T-Mobile, they are able to give you that speed, but probably not the same in building penetration unless they densify their network by building towers everywhere.
