I am trying to get an old Apple PowerMac G4 running again, a tower with the dual 1.42 GHz CPUs, but I ran into an unexpected problem with the display. The PowerMac gives a Power On Self Test tone, but then it shows a bunch of vertical colored lines on the VGA monitor. This is not the monitor that was originally used with this computer, and the VGA monitor is working properly when connected to a standard VGA output. For the PowerMac, I have the VGA monitor connected to a StarTech DVI-to-VGA converter, and the StarTech converter is connected to the DVI port on the ATI Radeon 9000 graphics card.

Am I using the wrong signal converter?
Is it possible for the ATI Radeon 9000 card to output a signal to a VGA monitor through a converter?
Is there some reset code that I need to give for the PowerMac to recognize the new monitor?
Have I missed something obvious?

Check for bent or missing pins on your DVI adapter.
