Apologies if this is a dumb question. I have a very old (late 2010 model) 11in MBA that sat on a shelf for nearly two years. When I finally glanced at it for once, I noticed the inside appears to have exploded (really). Nothing has come out, but the keyboard protrudes with a large lump that makes it impossible to fully shut. When the screen is down, the gap caused by the lump is about 8mm. It was never exposed to any crazy conditions, so I'm guessing the cause of death was natural.

I assume it was the battery and whatever happened destroyed the entire bottom part. My immediate thought was to dispose of it. But would a piece of junk like this put on eBay, with no guarantee of any parts being salvageable, sell for anything? Even $20? The screen was always perfectly functional and I have no reason to believe it broke too (but I really have no way of knowing...)

And more importantly, would the potential safety issue preclude the possibility of a sale? I'll greatly appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Just recycle it. Not sure what parts, if any, would be salvageable... and you should not ship anything with a damaged Li-Ion battery - most carriers will refuse it for safety reasons... and hiding the fact that the package contains technology with a leaking/exploded Li-Ion battery would not be cool, and possible not legal.

Best guess is it's a bulging battery. It probably took out the trackpad. It may have broken the logic board. Only way to know is to open it up and see if it can be repaired.

Exactly.
Open it up (remove the bottom case but be careful not to strip these fragile screws), unplug and remove the battery, re-assemble (w/o battery), connect the AC cable, try to turn it on.

I will be surprised if it doesn't respond.

But even for screen assembly and SSD alone you can get quite a lot of $ on ebay.

If screen and ssd are still are still okay (they should probably be), then in the mind of recycling I would put them on Ebay or Craigslist like platforms. Even as untested replacement parts it should work. Also the trackpad can be taken out from these MacBooks and sold as a replacement part.

As compact as the MacBook Air was designed, these machines could still be quite well and easily opened. (I opened my 2011 model quite some times to exchange SSD and completely take out the trackpad and clean it.) It's a quite straight forward take-apart, iFixit.com will be helpful with guides. Just be careful with handling the battery if it is in fact damaged to not get possibly hurt by it.
