OP, What notebooks does your ivy league friends have?
Probably not entry level laptops used as desktops i imagine.

basically what the OP wants, could be the M1 14” MBP, as for me neither of the released M1’s replace a 16” MBP.

I ordered the new MacBook Air M1 with a 16GB RAM upgrade to replace my 2019 base model 15" MacBook Pro (2.6/16/256/6-core).

I keep it in clamshell mode connected via thunderbolt to my LG UltraFine 4K display, which I bought from the Apple store.

I have live data feeds and live TV streams along with Microsoft Edge browser open with 100+ tabs 24/7. I never turn it off.

The M1 is not able to perform as well as my 15" in terms of speed and snappiness.

If I had upgraded not only my RAM to 16GB, but the graphics as well, would that fix my problem?
Sounds like you should've get a maxed out Mac mini instead.
Return it.

The mac mini is not portable though. I need a device I can carry around with me, should i need to. A notebook gives me that option. What I'm looking for is versatility. The M1 would have been PERFECT if it was as powerful because it could have replaced not only my 15" but my 12" as well since it is portable. But it's not really replacing my 15" sadly so then I guess I'm stuck with my current setup. I'm grateful for it, not really complaining, but was just optimistic about the change. It's no big deal though. Maybe the M2 will be better :)

OP,
You should have done some research before jumping to get the M1 just to say you had the M1. There are plenty of threads and posts on this forum that would have given you much needed insight and practical hands on information. The M1 doesn't fit your usage. And speaking of your usage, it doesn't make any sense. Why in the world are you using a laptop in clamshell mode with 100+ tabs constantly open? There is no reasonable workload that a singe person would need that kind of work for. Your description of usage sounds like nothing more than a kid bragging about what he is doing on the M1.

The problem is I didn't do my research or spend the time to read the threads. I just trusted Apple when they touted it. It sounded great. I actually still haven't found the information you mention.

I agree that I may need to stop using it the way I am, and start using it differently. I'm guessing there are better ways. Maybe try using lesser tabs.

I am not trying to brag or show off but I can understand how you must feel. I will try to not to talk about my M1 or my usage in a way that comes across as bragging again. My intention was not to make you feel bad or anyone else. Just trying to get some advice.

Probably you would have been better off and happier had you purchased the M1 MacBook Pro with 1 TB SSD and 16 GB RAM. That machine has a fan and its processor is somewhat more powerful than the MacBook Air. It's the same size as the MBA, although shaped slightly differently and a little heavier in weight. The M1 MBP sounds to me as though it would be a better fit for you than what you've got now. It may or may not run circles around the 2019 16" MBP -- I don't have one of those so cannot compare.

I do have a 2018 15" MBP with 1 TB SSD and 32 GB RAM and the new machine seems to keep apace of it pretty well. That said, I tend not to have a bunch of tabs open all at the same time and have no need to do so...... I do a fair amount of photo editing and although I haven't done a lot on the new machine yet, I have been pleasantly surprised at how well she handles the large RAW files I've thrown at her and processing speed feels much the same as on my older MBP.

The MBA has no fan, which can be an issue if the user is doing intensive tasks which could accrue heat buildup. That said, these M1 machines don't seem to get nearly as hot -- often one doesn't even get warm -- as the Intel-based machines, so for some users it wouldn't matter whether the machine has a fan or not.

Came here to say this. I see consultants do this all the time. The tabs are so small they can barely be clicked, it makes ZERO sense. I suspect as well they have unmanageable inboxes.

I told one guy you can save a tab as a favorite and come back to it instead of wasting my time clicking 3 or for tabs before you find the one you wanted to show me.

But, hey, who am I to judge. :)

Edge feels sluggish on my M1. Either upgrade to the beta or wait for the release.
