Buying a new Mac is something I definitely want to do, but many MacRumors users have said that it's better to wait for the new ARM Mac's that Apple release...
So your taking advice from one set of users, and yet many people have advised you to run High Sierra and browse cautiously, which you have ignored.

Trust me, I'm not ignoring anyone's advice.

I wish I could buy a new Mac Mini now 😢, but everyone seems to say it's a bad idea as the prices will be lower when the ARM Mac's are released...

Nobody knows the prices yet, it is pure speculation.
You may have software which runs better on intel cpu.
There are some good deals on Apple refurbished store.

That being said, I would wait until the Nov Apple event, we may know more about the mini then.

I didn't read all of the thread, but has anyone suggested and/or have you considered the dosdude1 Catalina or Mojave Patcher? I upgraded my (oficially unsupported) late 2009 iMac to Catalina and it is working fine. YMMV, of course, but ijust make sure you have a backup.

There are "how to" videos available on his website, if I remember.

Edit: I just saw someone else recommended this as well.

Thank you for your reply, but yes I've looked at dosdude1 and I don't want to use it because it's not something that's officially made by Apple.

Security is my number one concern and I'm very worried of using something that has direct access to my Mac Mini's hardware if it isn't made officially by Apple.

There’s a good chance Big Sur may go live at the November Apple event.
At which point there will be no more HS updates (Mojave/Catalina/Big Sur only).

High Sierra already is left behind. Safari 14 was not released for High Sierra, and it includes a number of security updates.
This. Apple won't officially confirm it, but dollars to donuts Security Update 2020-005 is the final Apple update for High Sierra.

Thank you for your replies!

Since it seems clear that Apple won't be making any more security updates for High Sierra, it'd be great if people could list the best ways to keep High Sierra secure.

1. Use a good antivirus like bit defender
2. Use firefox or/and chrome with adblock add ons
3. Don't visit possible malicious sites (like p0rn or torrents)
4. Always update third party apps to the latest possible version

These are the things that I am using to my Mac Mini and believe me I don't face problems so far.

Thank you for your reply Vasim!

Vasim, are you using a Mac Mini mid2011?

I think the topic of "Keeping MacOSX as secure as possible" deserves its own thread!

I have a MacBook Pro Early 2011 running High Sierra, support for which expires on 30th November 2020. Has anyone successfully used this MacRumors solution recently? Or any alternatives? All my files are saved, so I can withstand a crash! Thanks.

I have been running the 2020-006 since Wednesday last week on my iMac 27 2011. Everything seems to work well.

This is perhaps the very last scheduled update.

Safari is left behind since earlier on HS. Mojave, Catalina and Big Sur Safari versions v14.x includes security updates for Safari that doesn't extend to HS and Safari stays on 13.1.2.

Posted earlier from Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science:

'On November 12, 2020, Apple released macOS 11, Big Sur. In keeping with Apple's release cycle, we anticipate macOS 10.13 High Sierra will no longer receive security updates starting in January 2021. As a result, SCS Computing Facilities (SCSCF) is phasing out software support for all computers running macOS 10.13 High Sierra and will end support on January 31, 2021.'

Even though there will never be an official Apple press release on when they will sunset High Sierra, I trust the system administrators at one of the world's finest departments of computer science over anecdotal interweb opinion. I believe in frugal computing, i.e., using the damn thing for as long as I can. And my various Apple compute devices have been returned an astoundingly good return on my investment in this regard.

But there will be a growing risk if you use your machine for more than web browsing. The malware universe of the past does not predict the malware universe of the future. The most cautious thing you can do is upgrade soon.

Safe and sensible browsing habits goes a long way in being secure.
Some users will not be able to upgrade.

Also, using a web browser that still gets security updates can mitigate risks.

Firefox is still supported on High Sierra, and will most likely continue to be for a few years.
