I have an 18 week old mid 2012 mbp 13 with hdd and boot from optibay ssd and 16gb ram installed. with only 39 charge cycles battery health is 86 percent. seems like that is much poorer than everyone else's experience.

is there anything I might be doing wrong?

Hi,

Never trust a single spot estimate of battery health - it is quite normal for it to fluctuate strongly.
That said, it might be a good move to calibrate the battery (look it up) as well as making sure to let the battery discharge/charge fully every once in a while (electrons need to be moved)... There is a plethora of good guides out there for these things.

RGDS,
