I'm totally confused by thunderbolt vs thunderbolt mini vs displayport!

I have a 13" MacBook Air. I have a monitor that has a VGA connector. I want to get an adapter to let the VGA cable plug into my macbook's thunderbolt 2 port.

What am I looking for? Everything seems to say Mini DisplayPort or similar.,. Is that the same thing?!

Yes, mini DisplayPort, and Thunderbolt 2 are the same hardware connector.
So, a Mini DisplayPort to VGA is what you need, like this...

Or, better (in my opinion, anyway), a cable to plug directly from your MBAir to the VGA display.
