I recently installed Viber to keep in contact with friends in California without the huge bills. I was initially rather worried about loading it as I wasnt sure about contacts being uploaded to some server somewhere. I did read the terms and conditions which did not clearly state where and for how long my contacts are held by a third party. Anyhow, succumbing to my friends telling me it was a great free service, I downloaded the app from iTunes store. Initially I was very impressed at how clear calls were and indeed what a clever service. Then whilst running viber all my messages were deleted from my phone which crashed and restarted (something I have not ever had with my iphone4 on any 4.x.x OS.) Having now realised they are gone for good (unless I pay for a forensic retrieval, something which my texts do not justify) I looked at various message boards and can see that Viber hold your contacts for a year but in their t&c's also state that if the company was sold, your information will be sold. So caution is recommended. I would like to know if anyone else has lost information , I can see on iTunes people who have lost all contacts, anyone else lost messages?
Hi,
This is a member of the Viber Development Team.
First - Viber can't be the cause to the deletion of your iPhone's messages. Viber can't even access that info. The reason for this (and the crash) is probably some other external source, that might have something to do with an application you downloaded, or the fact that your iPhone is jailbroken maybe.
Regarding taking information from users and selling it -
It is important to be accurate we only collect names and phone numbers, nothing else. Naturally, we collect users' information not because we are curious of its content, but in order for functional reasons, and for us to enable the service we, as a company, promise to provide. Without that information, Viber cannot function. This is not different from any other major social network/communication service provider in our world nowadays.
I would like to clarify: we DO NOT sell users' information to anyone, and we keep this information WELL locked in our servers, with extremely limited access to it. The line in our Privacy Policy that refers to giving the information third parties does not mean that we sell it. sometimes it is necessary to pass to one or two companies in order, for example, to send an SMS with activation code (again - functional reasons).
In our contracts with those companies, we make sure the information we send it deleted immediately after its functional use.
Also, in our Privacy Policy you can clearly read that any company we might merge with in the future will be OBLIGED by law to comply with our current, strict privacy policy terms. Which means your information will remain safe, no matter if the hypothetical option of a merger becomes reality.
If you have further questions, please do ask.
Regards,
Viber Media.
