I need this for my Ultimate W200B bookshelf speakers.

Does anyone know if "Audioengine B1 Bluetooth Music Receiver" connects to the iPhone or iPad automatically? ...without going into Settings->Bluetooth->(device) every time

Might have to snatch this. I ended up buying a pair of Klipsch bookshelf speakers back when the Homepad was endlessly delayed and while they have bluetooth built-in it doesn't match the simplicity (and quality) of Airplay.

I have an old first generation Airport Express but that thing is just an exercise in frustration. Constant dropped signals and stuttering, and you can't even administer it anymore with modern versions of the Airport Utility software, meaning I have to find hacky solutions which, as far as I know, are broken in new versions of MacOS anyway.

Admittedly I haven't tried it since I moved out of an apartment into a house, so maybe less wireless congestion would help.

Whats the advantage of Airplay 2 over original airplay, when it comes to just sending music? I have one of those old Airport devices that Justperry posted, and it works fine connected to my stereo.

Another option I came across recently is Andover Audio's Songbird. It's an Airplay (version 1) and Internet Audio streamer. A little more money ($149) but you can stream Spotify, Tidal, Qobuz and others as well. Does output 24-bit/192kHz.

Not an option if you need AirPlay 2.

Forget about price — it’s unfortunate it has taken so long for a device like this to come to market. I find it interesting this releases after Google Chromecast Audio was discontinued. I would have never guessed those sequence of events. Apple just recently landed as my “soundbar replacement” with the introduction of theatre mode on the Apple TVs. (2 HomePods in the den and 2 HomePod minis in the living room).

I would really like to see a product from Apple that competes with Google Nest Hub and also see Siri improve just a little bit more and then I’m all in on HomeKit/AirPlay 2/HomePod assistants. I want to be there, but Google Assistant is still just too dang good.

this looks great to make old, high-end sound systems “smart”.

I do wonder, however, what kind of sound stage one would get out of this given the tiny pre-amp.

the concept is great, but I feel like it should have an optical audio out instead so you can losslessly hook it up to a powerful pre-amp.

That, of course would only work with in modern systems that support optical audio.

Other than that, something like a Cambridge audio 851N has a “proper” pre-amp and also supports AirPlay.
It does have optical.

The biggest advantage I've run into is being able to stream to multiple devices/destinations from an iOS device. iTunes/Music will stream to any mix of AirPlay 1 or 2 devices, but iOS devices can only target multiple AirPlay 2 destinations.
