I have a friend who's looking for a video card for her 2008/2009 Mac Pro. She wants to spend about $150. While I could install it, I just wasn't sure which one to get. Doesn't need much. She occasionally watches Netflix & Hulu, but no games.

    Thanks in advance!

    1st, her MP is either a 2008 or 2009.
2nd, there were 189 views and 0 replies because how often video card upgrades inquiries are posted. Also, it is frowned upon for some to suggest you search within the forum because there are oodles of posts about it. Since it is frowned upon no one will suggest that or post links:D!

You could find an used AMD 5770 at that price.

Why does she need one? If she’s not gaming on it, I would figure whatever’s in there already would be fine...

This. I've used the stock 5770 in my 2010 for the past 3 years without issues on hulu, netflix, or even light gaming. You could even use a GT 120 or 8800 for netflix.

The one in her computer died. So instead of paying the $500+ for a new Mac, she just wanted a new video card. $150 just because she brought it to the Apple Store and didn't want to pay $170 or whatever. IMO, that's not too bad, but it's her money.

If you want a new card and don't mind not having boot screens, a GTX650 is about $100-$120. These are not intended for Mac so they won't have boot screens, but otherwise they work fine when support was added in Mountain Lion and later. In your budget this is what I would get.

If you insist on a genuine Apple card, you'll have to buy a used one to be in your price range. A genuine Apple GT120 should be about $100-$150 on Ebay. A genuine Apple 5770 is a much better card and can be had for not much more outside her budget (maybe $180). But really for your stated purposes (Hulu and Netflix), you don't really need better cards.

So she would have you comb forums for answers over $20? Just give her the $20 already or de-friend her. LOL.
