Good video. So many different choices are available today while planning to get a Mac. Older models with M3/M2 should be available with discounts. All the latest Macs are very good.

Severance was not edited on an iMac and Mac Mini - those computers were remoting into other computers - you can see this if you look closely at the shots in this video.

Nice video but the first thing you need to ask is if you really need a new computer.
Well I have a Late 2015 27" iMac and while I love it - it is clearly getting long in the tooth. I can't even update Office 365 anymore from my work subscription, fortunately I have a work supplied laptop and rarely work remotely.

What is "blazing hot"? What temperature will cause harm to the electronics? Have you measured the temperatures and the fan speed?

Generally, about 65°C is a reasonable limit. The fan should be spinning at a speed that keeps the chips at 65 C or below. But spikes up to 80 C acceptable.

Apple does not sell their M chips, so they don't publish specifications but 65C is a good high-end limit for normal operations.

The problem with words like "blazing hot" is that to one person, it means it feels uncomfortable to touch and to another, it means 105C and your finger is burned if you touch it. Best to use actual numbers
Did you look at the attached screencap? 226 degrees for a steady 20 minutes of video processing. That's what I call "Blazing hot".

Did you not read dorsal's original post? Because I'm pretty sure "..runs at 100 C" is using actual numbers.

The M4 isn’t the issue here.
It's clearly not the M4. It's the poorly designed cooling system used with the M4. Of course, when talking about a fully integrated machine, that distinction makes no difference.

You simply chose the wrong configuration.
Bit late for a bait-and-switch now though. Should be a lesson to most prospective Apple customers - if you're planning to do anything other than very basic office work or watching TikTok videos online, do not buy a base configuration. Even though Apple and the brigade of Apple YouTube influencers will tell you that the base configs are perfectly fine, they are actually garbage - source: this guy.^^

For your workload, the M4 Pro would have been a better fit. It offers more power and a significantly better cooling system, which are exactly what you need. Hopefully next time, you’ll take the time to research the right setup for your needs
Yes, hopefully the guy who just dropped half a grand on a computer will "do better next time" by not thinking "hey, this is a premium computer by a company that advertises itself as the best platform for multimedia use and who is proudly hyping up this awesome, powerful set of processors they invented, it should handle a video conversion perfectly fine without burning out!" The nerve of some fools, right? You are absolutely on the money: anyone who is so cheap that they would buy a base model Mac absolutely deserves to be stuck with a doorstop.

I mean, Apple IS known for HORRIBLE thermal management, and always has been. 3rd party fans first appeared for the Apple ][+, were pretty much a necessity for the 1st Macintosh, it's been an issue for Apple's entire history.

Best Mac is either a official apple refurbished model or a slightly used older model. The deals I see now on older macs are just insane! I don't think there ever was such and easy and affordable way to be in Apple's ecosystem.
