Windows user that switched to Mac. Are there any FREE video codec pack that i can download and install on big sur so that i can play most of the video files avaible?

Codec packs are a Windows thing - Once there was Perian and Flip4Mac(or something along those lines)

IINA as suggested above or mvp or even VLC, although VLC is a dinosaur. I personally use IINA as my videoplayer for those exotic codecs that QuickTime Player won't play.

@Phat^Trance have you gone through the settings for IINA and see if anything is helpful there? I usually drag in subtitles myself. But that's of course not everyone's cup of tea.

The only setting page i found was when playing the movie and then going on the movie setting and then subtitles, it couldnt find any of the two .srt files i had there (automatically). i had to manually import the srt files for it to work. Is there a way to make it find the srt files automatically?

Try a different naming scheme:

Movie name.mp4
Movie name [English].srt
Movie name [French].srt

Also is it the only movie in the folder?

What if you take the folder, and drag via its icon, that contains the movie + subtitle and drag it onto the IINA icon in the Dock? That got IINA to fetch subtitles for me at once.

I was curious to learn how I could do it myself. I never thought about this issue. See if that works for you too :D

yeah that worked, when moving the entire folder to the IINA app
