Interesting the article overlooked Transparency. Seems the 3 doesn't have it.

I don't want the silicone inserts, as most such rapidly get annoying.
I do want Transparency, as the buds do inhibit sound and - wearing them for work several hours daily - I'd like to hear clearly without removing them. (Some may dis this. My $, my job, my ears.)
Without NC, Transparency is included in the new AirPod 3s.

No one here seems to be mentioning an important feature for some of us: AirPods 3 does not have Conversation Boost, while AirPods Pro does. MacRumors reported this on 20 October in <https://www.macrumors.com/2021/10/20/airpods-3-skin-detect-no-conversation-boost/>:

Meanwhile, Apple's tech specs page indicates that the third-generation AirPods do not support Conversation Boost, a feature designed to help people with mild hearing challenges stay more connected in conversations. Conversation Boost is only available on the AirPods Pro following a firmware update earlier this month.

Conversation Boost uses the AirPods Pro's beam-forming microphones to boost the volume of a person talking in front of you, making it easier to listen to a face-to-face conversation, and there is also an option to reduce ambient noise.

Upgraded from my gen 1 AirPods, which my right one was lasting a half-hour or so. These fit and feel better and the sound improvement is very noticeable to me. It probably helps there is the smart EQ happening in each ear. I have a bit of odd shaped ears, and the stems on AirPods do not sit flush with my face, but stick out and forward more. The additional bass is so appreciated! As I watch YouTube videos and turn my head, the spatial audio making the sound continue to come from my MacBook Air's direction is very noticeable and welcome.
The bass, for me is pretty good on the gen 1+2 Airpods, do you feel the 3 is even better?

For $179, there are quite a few competitive options that come in for less $$$ and include ANC that is on par with the AirPod Pros. That said, they won't have the seamless (sometimes) switching between your Apple devices, may have fitment issues, and may just be an ugly design to some.

If Apple's hand-off is not a big issue for you, it may be worth exploring options outside of these.

Are you aware of better options that don't have ANC? I don't want over the ear for daily use and I don't enjoy plugging my ears with earphone tips. That is why I have loved the AirPods and would not consider the Pros. I might give up some of the Apple convenience if there is anything close to as good. When I tested a few years back, I couldn't find anything that wasn't at least as much money that was as close to as good. But a lot changes in a couple years :)

Beats Studio Buds are $150 and a great option with a lot of features like:
  1. ANC/Transparency mode
  2. Soft eartips
  3. 8 hours listening time (24h with case)
  4. Sweat and water resistant
  5. 3 Color options
  6. USB-C charging
  7. Apple and Android compatible
No, they’re not AirPods and lack some features like spatial audio, wireless charging case and more, but still a good option to consider.

And still require something to plug your ear. I feel like that is just a huge decision right off the bat. Do you want an earplug style headphone or not!

I'm probably not a good reference but here is my story. I have had every iteration of the airpods. They are AWESOME for phone calls, which for work, i'm on the phone a lot. The biggest issue with them and the phone is they will disconnect for no reason, as if the earbud thinks it is out of your ear. Very annoying and really my only gripe. The Airpods PRO are awesome for walks and the gym as the noise cancellation is pretty darn good. I HATE the Pros for phone use though, to uncomfortable for me and I hate the rubber tips for long phone use.

tl;dr = for phone use, the regular airpods are better. For gym and walks or airplanes the pro's are better. Sadly I need both.

Exactly! When I get on the plane or maybe even at the gym I could see wanting something like that. I have a pair of over the ear Bose for plane rides. I am fine at the gym with my AirPods, but I could totally see someone wanting to completely drown everything out! :)

The 3's sound just as good as the Pro's if you take the tips off the Pro's. With the tips seal and sound direction, they produce a slightly different sound stage. You could argue its better, and maybe from a pure music representation point that is the case, but I don't enjoy listening to music with earplugs in, so I am fine with the difference of the 3's over the Pro's so far. Note, I have only tried my wife's and haven't taken the plunge myself.

After experiencing their disastrous audio source switching logic and extremely slow pair time (sometimes 10s before any audio popping up or none at all), I really start to appreciate those generic Bluetooth counterparts more. Heck, they even work more reliably than AirPods Pro. The guy living with me rn says AirPods are trash products. Before that Id argue a bit. Now, I can’t because AirPods Pro aren’t that great.

As a medical student the ANC of the Pros has paid for itself time and time again. For the additional $70, I’m not sure the Pros are worth it for most people but for me, the silicon is super comfy, they feel more solid in my ears, and the ANC is fantastic.

I wanted to like them but multiple pairs, many different tips still yielded little to no bass for me. Gen 1+2 Airpods had magnitudes more bass and sounded better.
I like the high frequencies and adjust EQ on my Nokias to enhance the high tones and apply treble voice profile on Apple devices. This track needs the bass turned up and the original HomePods are excellent with 80% volume playing, 'Best Friend'.

I do. Not thumping, just richer. It's quite nice. I compared with my old gen 1, back and forth with the same songs. I had watched one review where they said, "It's not like the AirPods 3 are going to make you hear instruments you hadn't heard before." Well I disagree. I've definitely been hearing instrumentation in songs that I had never noticed on the 1st gen AirPods.

It’s that weird moment where you can’t just get a truly ultimate AirPods at whichever price point.
Much like the last year when iPad Air got A14 upgrade while the Pro stuck with A12z for some time?

Current AirPods 3
1. No ANC/Transparency
2. No silicon eartips (for those who prefer one)
3. Arguably improved sound quality

Current AirPods Pro
1. No IPx4 rating for the charging case
2. No skin sensor
3. Same old speaker

You just had to compromise one way or the other. Unless you have to replace your AirPods for some reason, I’d wait for Pro update.

These are too big and hurt my ears :( sucks because they sound way way way better than AirPods 1 or 2, just don’t feel good in my ears :(
Same, I think. I LOVE my AirPods 2, and they fit perfectly in my small ears. The AirPods 3 sound better, but they constantly feel like they're about to fall out. I'm going to give them a few more days to see if I get used to them, but I'm not sure I like them. Two main critiques: I wish Apple would sell a couple of sizes of AirPods, and tapping controls is FAR superior to squeezing a stem, especially when I'm gardening and have my hands full of dirt (Siri controls work fine, mostly, but I have to wait on Siri, which makes me want to throw my phone in the trash, and then there are moments when I can't talk and need controls.). Give me taps that are customizable. On two sizes of AirPods. Without silicone.

Air Pods Pro simple will not fir my ear with any of the 3 tips. Washed my AP 2's and now the mic's don't work. Looks like it will AP 3's for me.

To answer your question, Yes, but for my use case, ears, and listening style. Only caveat is I do prefer silicon tips to isolate sound, and ensure the device doesn't fall out. The nice thing is, there are a ton of choices that don't fall under the guise of being AirPod clones.

The biggest problem with this market segment is the fact that we humans all have different ears, and the process of sampling ear buds is a little gross. It has taken years of trial and error for me, but I have discovered I dislike large drivers to be placed on or in my ears, so my sample range was limited in my shopping. And sadly I kept (feel wrong returning) a few models I didn't like.

Here is a review on the set I like to use the most, and at $89 currently, provides a significant savings over the new AirPods, but have in ear tips you don't like. Their app is a bit junky (IMO) and their play through (as stated in the article) isn't great, but they are a nice set of headphones without ANC that sound good for my listening style.

Any news if there will be AirPods Pro 2 coming out anytime soon?

I currently own the Sennhesier MOMENTUM True Wireless when it first came out, but I feel it’s time for a change.

Transparency is an unnecessary feature on this model because it doesn't seal up your ears like the pros do.
There's still something large in my ears muting the outside world. As the one forking over the ~$200, I'll decide if it's necessary.

I don't think anyone was trying to say that physics don't apple to the new AirPods. Yes, something in your ear blocks more sound than something not in you ear. However, when you have the AirPod Pro's in your ear, they are designed to block as much sound as possible for the purpose of ANC.

The article doesn't directly talk about transparency (the thing that the person responded to you about) because since the AirPods are not designed to block sound (they just do because of physics) and don't have ANC, then Transparency Mode doesn't apply.

Could a headphone company add this feature to non-ANC in-ear headphones? Sure! Enhancing your surroundings while wearing an open design could be a very useful feature for some people. But it would not be a direct comparison to something that is specifically designed to overcome the problem that ANC in-ear headphones create.

My AirPods 2 fit well in my ears and I can play squash or lift weights and they stay in. I tried the AirPods Pro and they would always fall out with time. Are the AirPods 3 fit similar to AirPods Pro because they look similar?

I have used my wife's a few times to try them out. They initially felt like they would come out easier than the AirPods 2 did. It seemed like they were more like the Pro's but since they didn't have the tips, would have less "hold". However, after using them for several different active sessions, I think they actually hold better than the Pro's do. I think if the AirPods2 fit good, these would likely fit better since there is less weight pulling out of your ears. Of course YRMV, but I think they fit great and I'm just about ready to pull the tigger for myself.

Gen 2 fit perfectly in my ears. I can run miles without touching them. Turns out AirPods 3 are unusable because they fall out when I’m sitting still. They are being returned tomorrow.
