Seems like I'm in the minority but I don't see the point of video calling. To me it's one of those features you use for the first couple of weeks because it's new and then you'll never touch it again. I'll reserve judgement until after the keynote but Apple seems to have stopped being innovative when it comes to iPhone. It took 3 years but the competition has finally caught up and in someways past Apple. Once the apps are on par with the iPhone I think Apple will struggle with market share.

Video calling does sound like a fun feature to play with and I'll certainly be impressed if it gets implemented.

But, I'd like to point out that it's only useful if people you talk to also have the capability. I don't know anybody that has this on their phone. Well, I guess they gotta start somewhere.

If it runs principally (arguably "best") on WiFi, then there's no reason this can't be implemented with iChat. Currently you can assign a mobile number as an AIM contact in iChat and exchange text messages with it like you're IM'ing with another desktop client -nearly zero lag.

As far as running two-way video chat over 3G, I've used my MacBook pro with a Sprint wireless broadband 3G card to do precisely that for over a year and a half with no problems. I can even get a three-way video conference running entirely over 3g. Now, that's Sprint 3G I'm talking about -no guarantee AT&T can do that. And 4G will be even better.

My point is, the lack of video capabilities on other phones should by no means be a limitation.

It seems that many people aren't realizing that this now means skype on the go as well. I know "everybody" doesn't use skype but it certainly is becoming popular... this is what I'm excited/hoping for.

I can really only see this being useful in very limited cases, i.e video chatting with grandma who doesn't have a computer (but somehow has an iphone:confused:). Reason being it's a cell phone, not some in home appliance! You talk on the go while doing stuff, I don't think anyone wants people walking arm stretched out, pointing the camera at their face, walking not watching where they are going. I mean are the people looking down at the screen and texting while walking not bad enough?!

video conferencing is so going to kill the US ATT network. I'm not sure about how it will effect other carriers.

it will be wifi only...

ATT can't even give us tethering yet alone video chat.

And now that AT&T just removed unlimited data plans as an option...you're not going to be making many video calls for fear of passing the 2 GB cap. :(
