After I use the 4" Iphone I really be able to see if it is visually satisfying in all my activities or if its merely an extra 1/2 inch of real estate. While I believe that the 16:9 ratio could be better for video, the small size of 4 inches may not allow that ratio to be as pleasing as on a big screen TV.

Eh... this is what the iPhone 4 should have. Going through 4 generations on the same small 3.5" screen was too long. Nice mock video though.

Side note: iOS 6 seems more like a productivity pack update rather than an OS update, so why doesn't Apple just release it as a standard suite of app updates? (I'll take it still though! :p).

video of new iPhone

I watched in amusement how the new iPhone screen compares to the iPhone 4s and watching a movie. If you really want a comparison, try the new iPhone screen vs. the Samsung Galaxy S screen. There is a monumental difference. Apple loses again.:(

No to people here. And I'm tired of the whole retina display argument.

For the love of God people...STOP TALKING ABOUT 16:9!

21:9 IS WHERE IT'S AT.

Despite the people complaining about this "taller" iPhone, it will still become the new best selling iPhone ever and also the new best selling smartphone ever. Just like every other iPhone before it.

Me personally I plan to wait until around early-mid October to buy one unlocked. Can't wait to use a 4" iPhone. The video made it look very impressive. I'm mostly anxious to see the aesthetic design of the final product.

ugh. I've only owned iPhones since 2007 and have every other product Apple makes, yet this mis-fire of a phone will make me look elsewhere for the first time. Tall & skinny is such a WASTE. This video really drives that point home. Absolutely NO improvement in user experience. Plus, I have to carry a taller phone! Screen doesn't look bigger because it ISN'T (at least not where it counts.) As they said in 2011, epic fail.

Actually, this will be the first time the sales don't meet expectations. The tall, skinny design isn't what people had in mind when they hoped for a new form factor.

Exactly.

I know it's "mac"rumors, as in website full of stupid fanboys.

But in the real world, do you even realize that this is the most uninnovative new iPhone so far.

A taller screen? I mean is Apple black magick so good that there as that many stupid people who still rationnalize to the point where they think an iPhone having a wider screen is anything innovative, or remarkable or useful ?

Exactly.

Do people really think making a larger screen is innovative? Is a 4.8" or 5.5" screen an innovation? Is LTE an innovation or just an industry standard feature? I wouldn't say so. They're just bigger screens. So I'm trying to figure out what's so innovative about the GS3 since that's the phone many people here are comparing to the unannounced iPhone. Remember that the 4S was virtually identical to the 4 in terms of looks and there were the same number of people complaining that they were disappointed that Apple didn't release a radically different design.

Then the thing actually came out and it still set sales records. Let's not kid ourselves, this one will still be the best selling iPhone regardless of what it looks like. There are too many iPhone loyalists for it not to be.

Exactly.

And the phone you will buy instead will be 99.9% probability be 16:9 ratio (tall & skinny). Ergo you are a fool...

Thing is when the 4S came out there was no real alternative i.e. SG3, I had every iPhone up to the 4 then when the SG3 came out I jumped ship purely for the larger screen.

The SG3 is an amazing phone and simply runs circles round the iPhone in every way and I don't regret my decision to switch in fact I chuckle to myself when see how everyone is getting so excited over an extra 0.5" and imo all it does is make the iPhone look awkward.

Don't get me wrong if Apple blows me away in the future with a new iPhone then I'll switch back but honestly with no SJ I worry they won't.

A) is there a law that says every release must be innovative? Innovation, if we dont use the term so damn loosely, is hard to come by
B) the phone hasn't launched yet, we don't have enough details to say it is or isn't innovative
C) is every other manufacturer making innovative changes in every single model iteration? Nope
D) Nobody has said that a 16:9 screen is innovative. Certainly not Apple.
E) Did you stop to think that this new device may have more to offer than a new screen? I don't personally think moving to a 16:9 ratio is all that great myself, but I am excited to get LTE.

----------

And it will have at least 195k more pixels that the rumoured iPhone, that's over 1/4th of its screen.

But he makes a good point. Everyone is complaining about it being "tall and skinny" when in fact, the phones they compare it too are the exact same ratio. So their argument is foolish.

Now if you want to argue actual screen size, as in number of pixels, that's a logical argument. You're entitled to buy the phone you want with a larger screen. Nobody here will stop you. Some of us want the smaller screen and will be happy with the new iPhone. We don't have a problem with your choice, why bash ours?

Well stated! Exactly what I was trying to say. Where is all this innovation people complain Apple doesn't have? Did Apple even say the "I" word yet? Damn phone isn't released and people are bashing marketing terms that haven't even been used.

Who is this everyone you speak of? I've seen a couple of posts of some people that seem to be excited, but FAR from an overwhelming "everyone". I'm excited for LTE, but the screen size could've stayed at 3.5" as far as I'm concerned.

Anda again, that awkward ratio is the same ratio as your new phone. You don't seem to think that's so awkward?

Personally, I find the screen size of the S3 awkward. My buddy finds it difficult to reach parts of the screen with one hand. He's an average sized guy.

Best post of the month. :D

This is a myth that keeps getting repeated. I LOVE the Retina displays, but I can still see jaggies. Print resolution is still much higher. Steve Jobs predicted the current Retina resolution will do for several years, not forever.

If you're seeing jagged edges it's because you're viewing images that aren't optimized for the display, just up-resed. Most web images are still 72dpi. Anyhow, unless you're a bird of prey, there's no chance you can see jagged edges on optimized elements.

WOW!!! A 4" SCREEN!!!

It's a darn good thing nobody has ever done THAT before!

Thank you Apple for once again pioneering with such revolutionary ideas!

I sure hope Samsung, or HTC, or Nokia, or Motorola, or any of the other major players who already have 4" screens don't attempt to copy this brilliant innovation! Boy oh boy, I'll sure be sorry for them if they do hyuk hyuk!

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Uhh. You should stand up, go outside, and take a deep breath of fresh air. There's nature out there. You'll feel better.

I don't care about the ratio. The point is, if they were going to make it larger (which I don't think they needed to), they should have upsized BOTH dimensions. ergo, ...meh, nevermind

I don't think they should have changed it, but if they were to change it 16:9 is the more logical ratio for a media device. And let's face it, smartphone are media devices. I know I don't watch many videos on mine, but a lot of ppl do.

I live and work in Asia. For the last months every mom and her dog had an iPhone - or so it seemed. But lately I have seen a tremendous shift towards Samsung. Even after being on the market for only a few weeks, the SG3 has become wildly popular here, just as the Galaxy Note. Even petite Asian girls don't appear to have problems handling a 4.8" - 5.3" device (ah, did that came out right? :p) No, seriously, the phone market has changed. It is not about Smartphones vs. Dumbphones anymore. That ship has sailed. These days the music plays almost solely in the smartphone segment. And for that, I believe it is a huge mistake by Apple to just offer one size. And a size, whis is in the lucrative Smartphone Segment, relatively small. If Apple releases only a slightly taller phone, then I am afraid, Samsung will eat Apple's lunch.

After all, Apple offers 11", 13" and 15" laptops, too. Variety, choices, catering for consumers needs. But only one size phone - and that relatively small. :(

I wonder if they'll also supply larger thumbs. I already have trouble reaching to the other end of the screen with phone holding hand on the current design. Let alone if it were taller.
