I literally went through grad school creating AND presenting everything directly on an iPad Air 2. Why do we need macOS for this?Apple should make a Mac tablet. As small and light as possible. Ideally, 200 g and pocketable. Even without battery, but charging from the mains. Not for heavy work, but the ultimate Keynote and PowerPoint presentation tool. Make the presentation on the desktop Mac. Save it into the Mac tablet and carry it to the presentation room. Great for teachers and researchers.
That’s why things like the magic keyboard exist - the iPad isn’t limited (unlike macs) to one form of input. macOS doesn’t need to be optimised at all for iPad, it just requires the user to use a mouse and keyboard like every other Mac...Until macOS is optimized for touch (it never will be), I'll pass on something like this and just hope Apple continues to refine the OS designed for the device instead.
We definitely need a good file system on the iPad where we can edit and move files around.A decent file system on iPad? Sign me up!
(If there is one thing I hate on iPad, it's Apple's obsession with keeping files off my iPad and in the Cloud. Do these people never fly? Or does their expense account pay for in-flight wifi? I stopped buying iPads with large memory since Apple will forbid me to use it! And it's the most important thing keeping me from using it for more productive tasks. You never know when you won't be able to access your files.)
I’m confused, there’s a “Files” folder/App on my iPad & I store all kinds of documents in there. No WiFi needed.A decent file system on iPad? Sign me up!

Full MS Outlook client would be a huge step forward in accepting the iPad for work but the lack of a true accessible filesystem is still a pain.No need for it, all I wish for is full fledged Office and Photoshop for iPadOS ( not the joke Adobe is selling now) and I can say goodbye to my Mac
This year Apple should enable iPad Pro to run macOS and it's fine to have rules like 30% minimum battery and keyboard and mouse attached. iOS can't be taken seriously to replace the desktop work.
Right now my use case is having a laptop plus an ipad, I need the two separate devices, but there are use cases when a 2in1 device would be perfect. Instead of cooking up ******** differentiators for the pro like lidar (in a tablet..), just double the ram and storage, and make it run macos too. Probably it would not need to be dual boot, just a UI switch between ipados and macos modes. And make that the pro feature. if they are worried about user experience, they can restrict it to when it's on external display with mouse+keyboard attached.
Feels better now? Let it out of your system. It's a good job you're not a product designer (and unsurprising you're not)
The issue is that you can't sync it with your Mac. In general, there is no way to ensure that some particular file will be on your Mac and on your iPad (like you can ensure via Dropbox that a file is on multiple Macs and other machines). So if I need a file from my Mac when flying or have a bad connection, I'm out of luck with my iPad. Why have 1TB of memory if you can't permanently sync?I’m confused, there’s a “Files” folder/App on my iPad & I store all kinds of documents in there. No WiFi needed.
Would be fine with me. And as it is just a software solution, people who don't like it can just not use itRight now my use case is having a laptop plus an ipad, I need the two separate devices, but there are use cases when a 2in1 device would be perfect. I would be even more impressed to see MacOS Big Sur running on an Apple Watch - and before you flame me, it's a joke. Besides, I am sure I have seen XP running on a watch. The reason for doing it is "that we can" rather than "why would you want to". I remember running a Windows VM on a Mac, that was itself running another level of virtualisation, and was running a VM of Mojave. Why ? - Why Not ? lol
A video demonstrating macOS Catalina running on a current 2020 iPad Pro has been shared on YouTube, giving us a look at an interesting hack that has a Mac OS up and working on one of Apple's iPads.
There's limited information about how the process of getting macOS Catalina on an iPad Pro works, but it uses x86 emulation and was done through the UTM software that allows virtual machines to run on iOS.
Booting up into macOS Catalina took a full 20 minutes, though the original creator says that it has since been optimized and now takes approximately 5 to 7 minutes. The video is over 37 minutes long due to how slow macOS Catalina is on the iPad, and it is not a functional or usable installation at this time, but it's interesting to see the macOS operating system on an iPad Pro.

I would say the next evolution will merge iOS and macOS. Then we will have 1 OS for both product lines. The changes to the user interface on macOS Big Sur were deliberately to support touch. Menus spaced apart, larger "touch" targets.... it's all setting the stage for a touch-based macOS.
well, you know 720p and thick 90s bezel isn't great/acceptable.Or just, you know, buy an M1 MacBook Air.
Really nice. Anything special used? Just MSOffice apps and/or Apple’s ones?I literally went through grad school creating AND presenting everything directly on an iPad Air 2. Why do we need macOS for this?
