Ok my macbook had been working perfect, I had a random shut down issue here and there where out of the blue it would just restart. Now about 2 weeks ago my wife was using the computer and went to turned it on, and there was no startup chime, the fan and hard drive kick on, and the screen goes gray. but before the apple icon pop ups the screen starts to flash with gray and white vertical stripes. It won't go any further just flashes and flashes. the caps lock and numlock keys won't light up, and i tried booting off an external firewire drive but it won't even pull up the screen to select the boot drive.
Any ideas of what could be wrong?

the computer is a a1181 2.0ghz with 2 gb ram and snow leopard
