A video purporting to be of the third-generation Apple Pencil has today been shared online, showing a glossy finish that mirrors previous leaks.

The brief video from Twitter account @ileakeer, spotted by 9to5Mac, shows an Apple Pencil with a glossy finish much like the first-generation model, but with the flat edge that was added on the second-generation version for magnetic charging. The design mirrors previously leaked images suggesting that Apple is returning to the glossy finish for the Apple Pencil.

Other reports from the leaker "Uncle Pan Pan," who seemingly leaked the entire spring range of iPhone cases, have also said that Apple is actively preparing to launch the third-generation Apple Pencil.

It is not clear what new features may be coming to the new Apple Pencil, but it seems that upgrades may be more focused on the internals of the accessory rather than any significant external design changes. Nevertheless, it is not unreasonable to expect some added functionality over the current model to justify a new iteration of the device.

The leaked video serves as yet another indication that the launch of the third-generation Apple Pencil is imminent and will likely be announced at the "Spring Loaded" Apple event next week alongside new iPad Pro models.

So, Apple discovered the technology that pencil makers have been using for decades, that is, making flat sides instead of something completely round?

(Sorry, I have no idea what current Apple pencils look like and what is the innovation shown in the video. It's just for the sake of the joke.)

edit: okay, shut up to myself

I so wish iPad pro would be compatible with 1st gen pencil. I hate that I will have to buy this though I have a perfectly fine 1st gen pencil. Hate it when apple makes these things hard. And 1st gen pencil only charges fast with the lightning connector. Takes forever when put on a power cable. So even if the 1st gen works with the latest pros, charging the damn pencil will be a pain.

The first gen always felt slippery when using it. I like the matte one a whole lot more. Not looking forward to this third gen if this is true. Also looks cheaper in my opinion.
I don’t understand how people find matte surfaces grippier than glossy ones. When I take a glossy drinking glass out of the cupboard, I never feel as though it’s about to slip out of my hands. My fingertips almost act like small suction cups. The glossy stainless steel frame on the pro iPhones for the past few years has felt much grippier to me than the matte anodized aluminum one on the regular and older models. I also found it easier to grip the older glossy glass-backed phones as opposed to the newer matte frosted glass ones. All my grade school pencils where covered in that glossy wax layer; all the pens were made out of glossy plastic.

For me, glossy is grippy and matte is slippery.

Can confirm this glossy thing is the Spring Loaded pencil we were teased:

I waited a year to buy a new iPad because I did not want to buy a gen 1 pencil device when the gen 2 was already out.

Scenario: wanted to upgrade from an iPad Air 2 to the iPad Air 3 when it came out in Mar 2019. But it used the gen 1 pencil. Thought hard about it again when they were on-sale in Dec. Finally got an iPad Pro in Mar 2020.

Should be interesting to see what compatibility is for gen2 Pencils on new iPad Pros. I love the Pencil as is, would definitely end up wrapping it if it only comes in a gloss version. Gloss plastic is such a bad idea for an item that you touch so much, plus having it charge on the aluminum of the iPad can’t be great for it either, scratch-wise.

Completely agree but having said that, there is a lot of stupid people so I have no faith in humanity there :D :D :D

If you have a second gen and want to pony up the $$ for this “upgrade”, then I’d re-evaluate your life priorities

Have to say I HATE the gloss - hated it on my original Pencil - but if the add an eraser head (barrel tap is awkward and distracting) I'd be in for the upgrade.
Yeah, this is basically the only reason I can imagine wanting to upgrade. I write on the Zoom whiteboard for my students all day, and an easy eraser would be really nice. Then again, Zoom would have to incorporate the functionality for it to work.

Yeah I think I’ll stick with my matte finish series 2, thanks. At least it’s not completely round like those early leaks indicated it would be.
