A new video has revealed our first look inside the iPhone 14 Pro Max, showing an L-shaped battery, updated placements of display components, larger cameras, and more, just days ahead of when new iPhone 14 models are expected to begin arriving to customers.

The early teardown was done by PBKreviews and shows an internal design that looks similar to last year's iPhone 13 Pro Max but with a few changes. Like last year, the battery in this year's iPhone 14 Pro Max is L-shaped, and as MacRumors previously reported, the battery is slightly smaller than last year.

According to Apple, it has made internal design updates to all models of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro to better manage heat. While this teardown doesn't allude directly to what those changes are, there is a metal plate that covers the main motherboard that may have been better optimized to dissipate heat. A graphite film on the back of the display also helps with heat, as shown in today's teardown.

Closer look at the hole-punch and pill-shaped cutouts as well as the new proximity sensor

The teardown also gives us a closer look at the updated notch replacement, consisting of hole-punch and pill-shaped cutouts digitally merged within iOS to create the Dynamic Island. For the first time on iPhone, Apple has placed the proximity sensor under the display to free up space in the TrueDepth camera system and eliminate the notch in favor of the digitally created pill-shaped cutout.

On previous iPhones, the proximity sensor, which detects when the phone is flat on a table, in your pocket, or being held during a phone call, was housed in the notch alongside components for Face ID.

The teardown also shows the updated rear cameras, a closer look at the earpiece, and more. A more detailed teardown of all models of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro are expected to be completed by iFixit soon after the devices begin arriving to customers. iFixit's teardown will offer a more comprehensive understanding of what has changed internally on the latest iPhones.

I wonder if the thing that’s placed where the SIM should have been really is for satellite connectivity. That would mean only US hardware has it (same with mmWave antenna).

I’m now also curious where they put the second ambient-light sensor. The tech specs of 14 Pro say there are dual ambient-light sensors.

I read through expecting to read more about the lack of SIM slot and what the space was used for but I didn’t find that unless I missed it. Maybe it is for the satellite hardware. I would not know just by looking.

Overall this is the least excited I’ve been for a new iPhone in quite awhile. This upgrade year just feels off for some reason.

For you. Coming from an 11 Pro Max I'm pretty excited. I found the 12 and 13 to be even less interesting than this release, hence why I continued to wait (almost pulled the trigger on the ProMotion 13 though).

Pretty sure iPhone 13 and older have a graphite sticker on the display as well. The metal plate over the logic board is new. What’s most interesting is the plastic spacer where the SIM slot is supposed to be.
From what I’ve read, the international version of the phone will have a physical sim slot…probably why the spacers are there

I think it’s a nice update and I’m upgrading as usual, but I think with the maturity/saturation, pandemic, pre-recorded events and other factors… it’s not as exciting this time around.

I think we’ll start seeing some major innovations next year and beyond. Apple’s product lines are getting closer and closer to being future-proofed / modernized.

i’m still rocking my 11 pro since launch. the ONLY thing holding me back is lack of USB-C. it’s beyond me how apple just can’t let go of their stupid old lightning.

You can count on that being said by many year after year on this forum whenever Apple rolls out a new phone. Yet Apple will continue to manufacture and sell roughly 600,000 iPhones every day of the year (on the average).

The size of the FaceId/Pill components show why its further down the screen, looks like its too big to go any higher.

We're all ready for USB-C but there is no rush on Apple's part. The lightning port does not take away from the device in their use so it's not a part they are compelled to update. I'm ready and you're ready but they are not. Once they do, it will be like the 30 Pin connector swap with lightning to USB-C adapters for all of the devices out there with lightning ports built in. It will generate a lot (dont have numbers) of waste with products that are no longer compatible with the port that will need to be replaced with USB-C versions. I wonder if they will remove the port completly before they opt for USB-C. Time will tell.

Too bad he probably didn’t read that the back glass is separated from the chassis. Super curious on how that can be removed and potentially replaced in the future. Hope ifixit will do that

Heat dissipation remains a concern - do internal changes mean anything when the phone is wrapped in a thick rubber case? It seems the necessity of a case negates the benefit of many internal and external design features. No?

(I say necessity because handling a bare iPhone is only marginally easier than handling a wet bar of soap).

Another thing I don't see anyone mention is that now the phones can be opened from the back too. You can lift up the back glass without making a mess, which makes repairs easy too.

Indeed, a very good question.
