I'm not sure if there are any 3rd Party cables available yet. The old 3rd party cables do not work, regardless if they hook up to the dock connector or not, since apple has added the authentication circuitry to the new cables. If the iphone/touch does not ask you if you want to "display on tv" when you try to play a video, the cable will probably not work.

I purchased the composite cables and the video looks pretty good on the television. Ripped movies with handbrake, using the iPod "High-res" preset look great.

dang, it'd be great if someone came up with a hack to deactivate the stupid authentication...

The cable sounds great but what I'd really like to do is play quicktime videos accessed over WIFI through safari (so I can stream videos from sites like www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer). These are quicktime videos which play on safari but I presume they wouldn't play on the TV through this cable???

I think I have answered my own question. Found a review of the product on the apple site saying that iPlayer worked so I've bought one to find out....

My personal wishlist includes the ability for the iPhone/iPodTouch to be able to video "actions", like "browsing the web" or "using an application" or such. The ability to take presentations off of the Mac, and using Quicklook, display a Keynote presentation from the phone, onto a big screen, would be simply amazing. Even simply browsing a webpage to demo a site to web design clients on a large screen LCD monitor. These devices will immediately begin raising the bar far past anything else on the market.
I would like to see this as well.

I use the Apple Composite AV Cable with my Touch.

It shows video just fine. Just wish that I could show whatever was on the screen. This would be great for PowerPoint presentations. Just export PowerPoint slides to pics, then upload the pics.

Hopefully we will see an app or update to the OS that will allow for this.

I covered this in another thread but ill post my answers here
=============================================

don't worry this is a common problem
I'll try explain it

There are three kind of cables that you can connect to the iPhone

1) the first type simple does not work, no video ouput and the cable will just say that the iPhone does not support the cable

2) the second type will play a movie for about 60-90 seconds, eventually it will stop sending the video out signal and tell you that the accesorry a not supported. This is typical of the cheap av cables you can buy on eBay right now.

3) The third type of cable works, and works most of the time but occasionally it will stop sending out the video signal. My theory is that it's a loose connection. In order to restore the video out signal you will need to hard reset your iPhone (hold power and home button for 10 seconds)

I've tried about 5 different cables with my 3g iPhone consider me an expert on this
