Title says it all. The apps are all sharp, but the video passthrough is terrible. My vision is perfect, but text on posters are blurry, peoples faces are pretty blurry, etc. This is in a bright room in the apple store, not just at home as well. Tried all different sizes and 3 different vision pros at the Apple Store - was there for 3 hours. :(

What's crazy too is that the video is crystal clear and sharp when mirrored to the apple tv - is it just me with bad focus using passthrough? Note, I am not talking about motion blur - although that's there as well lol. This is without motion

I think Apple set itself up with the ads showing passthrough as crystal clear. I think it’s fine. I can see what’s going on around me, and latency is basically zero, so I can walk around with it. I have glasses and don’t need an AVP to substitute for them. The important thing is that all of the text, images, and video are super clear, and I can also see what is around me.

Thanks. Ok so when you look at people’s faces it’s slightly out of focus for you guys as well - it’s not just me?

It’s not just you. It’s not the crystal clear experience early hands on reviews and Apple led us to believe. I also thought maybe my light seal or device was defective. I actually went back to the store, tried a different light seal and a demo headset. Spoke to a few employees who confirmed what I was experiencing was normal. The passthrough is good, but I was expecting real life clarity. Hands blur, people are a little fussy, and you clearly can tell it’s cameras projecting an imagine.

You’re mirroring through to the TV at 720 P. Your eyes see at far greater resolution. The best video pass-through you would get is 8K and this thing definitely doesn’t do that and even if it did it still wouldn’t be crystal clear.

Faces, people, text is all very clear on mine. Pretty much just like the videos for that… I can read text clearly on my phone, watch, even monitor. I also picked up a book and can read that fine.

There is color smearing when moving fast in poor light, and it definitely is harder in very dim light.

yes this with showing a different strap, and the FOV was my sticking points for sending it back

Honestly I feel like most people have this experience- I can’t imagine that all the reviewers forgot to mention that hands and people’s faces are out of focus. I can’t for example make out someone’s face who’s 15 feet away, and even if they are close, they are still blurry. Yes I can see my surroundings but def massively disappointing and a HUGE surprise. We should do a poll I wonder

After reading posts like this I was very nervous but I picked mine up today and IMO while you can certainly describe viewing things in the medium or long range in a room as slightly blurry or slightly out of focus but for me it’s not even close to a dealbreaker.

I’m incredibly nearsighted so I’m used to things being blurry if they are out of my short range vision. I would describe it the same way as I felt when I was first diagnosed with nearsightedness. If I were sighting in the front section of the classroom I could read the chalkboard no problem, if I were in the middle I’d have to squint a bit but could still mostly make it out and if I were toward the back of the classroom I couldn’t make out the writing at all.

If I want or need a perfectly clear view of medium or long range items in a room I’m probably not engaging in an activity that’s appropriate for the Vision Pro anyway so for me it’s an imperfection that will be there until technology improves but it’s nowhere close to a deal breaker. I can still see the entire room incredibly well for an AR / VR headset that is showing me objects through a camera which is what the Vision Pro is at the moment.

If you’re expecting a near flawless experience v1.0 of this hardware isn’t going to be for you. I’d say definitely go to the Apple Store for demo. This is the first thing I noticed after I put on the device and though I’d pre-ordered it I could have walked away without picking it up and gotten a refund, and still might ultimately decide to do that, but I knew once the demo started that this wasn’t going to be a dealbreaker for me.

I’ve been playing around with this since I got it, and I think the are a few factors/tricks:
- Definitely make sure you have a good fit and align your display. Took me a few tries to get it right.
- Lighting conditions in your room will heavily impact the pass through video quality. Looks much better in brighter settings.

I can see everything in my house in pretty great detail. I can see the time on my watch and read a message. My phone display also looks fine through these, but of course not as good as it does with a naked eye.

I have the same issue--the pass through video looks fairly low resolution. I can read things up close with it, but it's distorted. Anything more than a few feet away looks like it's enlarged to much for the resolution. The dynamic range is pretty poor with lots of blown-out highlights. It's good enough to get around and see who people are, but no where near "in-real-life" good. Generated content is crystal clear.

I suspect that they limit the resolution to cut latency. The promo videos are usually viewed on much (subjectively) smaller displays, so the quality issues are not apparent.

It will never be crystal clear because of small camera sensor which is totally normal. For what Apple did, they used a large format video camera.

I wonder if anything can be done with a software update to improve this? I wouldn’t say the passthrough in Apple’s promos is crystal clear but apparently a lot better than what a lot of people are getting. Strange the reviewers haven’t really mentioned it and it seems a little underhand on Apple’s part. Seems like passthrough and eyesight both amount to false advertising on their part.

Imo Eyesight worked fantastically.

Passthrough was good enough just not quite good enough to read with easily yet… maybe readers or prescription lens inserts will fix this.

No. You are looking through a camera lens to read text…. Its just not gonna be easy right now. The cameras arent top of the line sony cameras

Good to hear Eyesight is working for you I thoughts it might be something you need to see in real life, it seems fairly subtle. I’m not sure how bad the passthrough could be when you see reviewers walking around outside without a worry.

Perfect example - listen to this review of the passthrough from Marques. He never once mentions things being low res and out of focus looking. He instead says there's fantastic clarity, gives sharpness as an example for why, and shows video that looks truly sharp. He then says you "almost" feel like you're looking through it, which is 100% not the case for me lol

Or and anyone. Im not sure why he is overselling but he definitely is. To me passthrough is like taking a video where the subject is in focus and the background has a some slight bokeh added to it to make the subject stand out more. The background is slightly blurred or just out of focus.

Yeah you can walk around the world without a worry using passthrough. I can confirm. You will struggle to read iphone text directly from your iphone. Dont torcher your eyes or yourself and use messages. Small paper text we wont be able to read, we’ll just have to deal with it.

Room lighting and brightness are a huge factor. I know for me at home I have dimmer switches, so I rarely have my lights all of the way up. Cranking them up all of the way and turning my phone brightness all of the way up made a big difference.

You can tell from his videos he’s in a well lit studio, so is in the perfect conditions. Most people using it at home are probably not in a similar environment, so I think that plays heavily into blur and clarity.

Didn't order any lens correction as well.

I am thinking the same thing as I have a very light correction at distance.

Don't know if ordering a set would help or remain the same - it's $150 to find out...

The pass through has been my only complaint (I love this thing!), but I think there is something wrong with the pass through. Not sure if it’s software or hardware. I have watched numerous YouTube reviews which are using SCREEN RECORD (not the 720P mirroring), their pass through looks nothing like mine. Mine looks like I’m looking through frosted glass and I’m tripping on acid. If some devices are crystal clear and others aren’t, I suspect they might have some faulty hardware.
