Hello,

I am planing to buy ipad. but before i do, i have to know about its capabilities to play back videos. So wanted to know its capabilities to play back different type of video. SO what does one have to do to play back AVI or MKV format videos on ipad?

from the Apple tech specs:
Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

You can use HandBrake to convert MKV files into H.264/mp4 for playback.

Conversion's the best option but you can also stream a wide range of formats from your computer using VLC or Air Video or use alternate players like CineX for avi files.

I use a third party player to play files, I use BUZZ player HD it supports 3GP, AVI, ASF, FLV, MKV (Matroska), MOV (QuickTime), MP4, NUT, Ogg, OGM, RealMedia, Bink, WMV, XVID, DIVX. Also has sub and srt subtitle support, network streaming, and the best part is u can sync ur video files from iTunes without the need to convert them. It supports iOS 4.3 on the iPad 2

I will have to try Buzz,

Currently I use Azule. It is nice and I am satified as I originally thought the only movie watching I would be doing would be from Netflix. Now that more of my movies are available, i will watch more more now.:D
