I have tried to play a movie from itunes as well as quick time but for some reason when I pause a movie, it lags to even start up again? Mind you I am downloading a torrent but should this happen?

What free movie playback apps are best for Mac?

I like the interface of mplayerx. It has been my default for a while now.

Another well-known option is VLC.

Sometimes a video is encoded in a weird way such that one player has problems rendering it (sound goes out of sync with video, video looks blocky). Usually, the other player renders it just fine. So while it may seem silly to have two players on your system, I think it's pretty useful.
