Very dated. I have no idea why macrumors keeps posting about it. Seems many posts here are agnostic to care about Fortnight, you and I included.

It’s not just Xbox and PlayStation as well.

What you’re forgetting. Is you need either system and an account in either to get this happening. Not the kind of celebration being as easy as you’ve stated, right?
Do you actually need an Xbox for xcloud? I don’t think you do. I think you can stream your games to your other devices but I think this you can actually do without owning an Xbox.

You don’t need an XBox to play XCloud, that’s the point. If you’re willing to pay the subscription, you have access to hundreds of premium games on iOS using the cloud gaming service.
The addition of Fortnite allows you to test the quality of that service for free, much like Destiny 2 for Stadia.

If you need to play like this I suggest using a wired controller device as it cuts down on the latency which can already be quite high. I’ve played xcloud on iPhone, iPad and steam deck. On iOS it seems to have much higher latency. On steam deck it’s pretty decent feels like maybe double the input latency of playing natively So not bad for most games except fast paced FPS. Of course this all depends on your internet connection and location.

I was curious about the service (I never once used Xbox Cloud Gaming before or any cloud service for that matter) and decided to give it a try. I just finished playing a match of Fortnite and… it played fine. There were no noticeable issues at all. I didn’t have any noticeable control lag (touch screen) and I managed two kills before getting eliminated at around #65 or so. I‘m not a competitive gamer or anything. I‘m fairly-bad at Fortnite no matter what I play it on, but I didn’t do any worse than I would normally do (one or two kills and eliminated in the 60s-70s is typical for me, lol). It was entirely-playable and enjoyable over WiFi on my iPad Pro using touch controls.

It was a good enough experience that I’m considering paying for full access to the service now (I don’t have an Xbox, so this might be a good alternative to buying the Xbox Series S that I was considering buying).

I am not a gamer but will be curious to try this remote gaming service for Starfield which should be released end of year. Incredibly detailed science fiction roleplaying game that most likely won’t be ported to Mac.

Ok, I know Fortnite is one of the least favorite topics here. Believe me: I get it. Fully.

I’m guessing few here have an 11 yo son. I do. And he was just getting into Fortnite, with PC-neighbor boy, when Epic pulled their stunt. So new to the game, that we hadn’t yet downloaded it from the App Store. And since we’re an Apple-only household, that’s meant no Fortnite - which, honestly, has been fine. The world somehow managed to spin. Anyway… for this household, the ability to access and play this little game again has been an unexpected, and welcome, treat.

That aside, the larger news here is, surprisingly, not the joy of a random 11 yo boy but what is possible with these online gaming scenarios. Pretty impressive. And reveals Epic’s stunt for what it was: an ego-fueled money grab from a tech billionaire that clearly needed a hug.

can't wait until regulators bring the hammer down on apple
There is no "hammer" to bring down. Apple did nothing in violation of federal law and so far every attempt to get a bill federal or state passed in the US has been either a total failure or tied up in committee. Until S.2710 or a modified version get to the president to sign the US regulators have a nothing burger. Oversea efforts so far have been a joke (30% down to 27%; big win for you there South Korea /s). Never mind the EU's DMA is a total train wreck and may have problems with the European Court of Justice. It would be totally funny if the EU passes this thing and the ECJ rules it wasn't valid.

Never cared for it, never liked it. Glad iOS is free of it.

Why would you care that if a game you don't care for is available or not. If you don't like it don't download it simple, but if others do then let them have them.

I don't know why anyone would be "glad" some title is not available in the platform. Weird mindset. And for the record I have never played Fortnite as F2P games are not my thing, but many others do and enjoy it.

what if i told you that there's other countries in the world

what if i told you that there's other countries in the world
Apple's worldwide iOS marketshare (17.38%) is a joke compared to Android+Windows (42.67%+29.56%) and the US is where most of their iPhone revenue comes from. More over why do you think this "renting" iPhone thing is coming out now? South Korea's effort has turned into a joke (27% vs 30%) and the EU is still trying to figure out something that will not be so blatant protectionism that it doesn't piss off the US.

EU Executive Vice President Margrethe Vestager's claim "Apple abused its dominant position" is so delusional that it is something that I expect out of a 'Trump really won the 2020 election' claimant. Android not Apple dominates overseas.

 the eu's hammer is bigger
I doubt it. Even people in the EU don't expect it to last and given how dysfunctional some countries in it are (can you say Greece, neighbor? I knew you could. :p) I can see why. It is just going to push things even further to software as a service which is not a good place.

According to someone else here “dominant” in the EU does not match the english definition of “dominant”. It doesn’t even factor in how many actual users there are.
