All I care about is: Do they blend?

No, wait: Do they FIT better? The first gen buds sit in a desk drawer because they do not fit my ears well. I was tired if having to look for the escaping bud as it leapt for freedom out of whichever ear it thought was a good escape plan. I thought of a leash, or ear loop, but those things look so stoopid to me. :D

AirPods (of all types) have arguably been the best Apple products I have owned.

That is said to be happening this year or next since the EU law comes into effect at the end of 2024. Hopefully we can just buy a USB-C case and keep our earbuds, but I would not be surprised if Apple just says "buy a new set". :p
I thought that EU law only affects phones, not accessories like APP2. No?

Love AirPods Pro 2. However, it's time for Apple to consider bringing a USB-C port to future AirPods Pros.

airpods-usb-c-ken-pillonel.jpg

They certainly have made a mess of the whole thing. Some do, some don't. It's like they think that USB-C is a 'low end' connection method (?), and obstinately cling to Lightning for their 'higher end' stuff. Past time to ditch it.

I wondering if the ANC performance decreases with use. Certainly the case with APP1 which I own.

It certainly feels that way. Initially I could not believe how clear spoken audio (podcasts) was while exercising. I didn't have to turn up the volume to hear. It seems like the noise cancelling was "turned down" or decreased over time and there is currently much more background noise than when they were new.

I've been happily using my APP1s for some time although not from original launch. I missed out on the mythical OG ANC but have definitely noticed it’s gone down in performance over the years. I'm tempted to buy these any time they go on sale for $199 but then keep holding out for revised copy with usb-c. Is that warranted?
Nah. The port is only for charging so it doesn’t make sense to hold out just for that.

Been using the Beats Fit Pro for quite awhile. Recently bought a pair of APP2s to use for work (dictation thru an iPhone connection to my MacBook Pro) but I determined quickly that I liked the fit/feel of the BFPs better, and they worked with regard to transcribing. Just my preference.

Dan - If memory serves me correctly, I recall in your review of the APP1 after wearing them for a number of months that you complained about the poor fit (and comfort). I also have the APP1 and the fact that they keep on falling out (despite trying all the tips) is my biggest issue. So the APP2 does come with one more tip size, but could you please comment specifically if you've noticed whether or not they stay better in your ears than the APP1. Thanks.
Try comply airpod tips.they come in a variety pack or single size. I have microscopic ears and they actually fit. Buy from Amazon so you can return if no good.

I loved my AirPod Pro 1, but the second time one fell out of my ears while walking, I bought the AP3 and love them. I've considered trying the Pro 2, but before dropping the money, I just ordered the XS tip for $8 from Apple and will try them on my original Pros to see if they offer a better fit.
Comply ear tips. I have tiny ears and finally these work. Order the smallest size. They should pay me for my testimonial. Whole other story.

So envy of you with ear-canals supporting in-ear headphones. I normally get irritation within an hour and have to stick to non-Pro AirPods hanging on the outside.

I thought that EU law only affects phones, not accessories like APP2. No?

The law covers a significant portion of consumer electronic devices, including:
  • mobile phones
  • tablets and e-readers
  • digital cameras and video game consoles
  • headphones, earbuds and portable loudspeakers
  • wireless mice and keyboards
  • portable navigation systems
  • laptops (though that rule takes effect in 2026)

I have APP1 and they're ok. I hear good things about the APP2 but for me the fit on the APP1 isn't that great. They fall out of my right ear after some time, or they loosen in my ear after some time and I have to push them back in to get a better seal. I use them while weight lifting and they definitely fall out from time to time. I recently got new apple tips a few months ago too. I've heard the Beats Fit Pro actually fit better in general. I said I wouldn't get the APP again, but now that I lost my APP1 and Find My fails to work, I'm heavily considering the Beats Fit Pro.

Are these points actually true?

Such observations will be determined by the individual and their use case. For GeoStructural, AP3 are better. For me, APP2 are better. Both of us are correct, as it applies to us, but our individual views cannot and should not be considered as a general consensus. :)

Interesting review. I agree with the Adaptive ANC, I have gotten used to it, but it was jarring at first. Thinking the AirPod was falling out of my ear. For my use, I actually noticed worse battery life than the original model (Air Pods Pro). Specifically the charging case dies in about half the time as the original model. With the older model, I could go 7 days, using the Air Prods for about an hour each day, before having to charge the case. With the AirPod Pros 2, I get about 4 days before the case is down to like 5 - 10% charge. Granted the AirPods themselves have a full charge, but the case is almost dead. I have to put it on the charger around Wed or Thursday each week to finish out the week. I do like the speaker on the case, and they also seemed to have fixed the connect/disconnect issue I had with the original model.

My original AirPod Pros sometimes would not disconnect completely from my iPhone or iPad (whichever one I was using), with one still connected, even when it was in the case. This prevented it from charging, and when I went to use them the next day, I would find one almost dead, and the other fully charged. The key was to remember to go into Bluetooth settings and force them to disconnect once you put them back in the case. I haven't (knock on wood) had this issue with the new model :)

I'll pick up a pair once they support USBC charging.
You'll be vastly happier if you stop being so dogmatic and just use wireless charging. Dropping these on the Apple wireless charger works like a charm.

APP2 have two great advantages over APP1
- they connect a lot faster. The difference between, I don't know, average wait of 3 seconds vs 1 second may not seem like much but it makes the experience feel a lot smoother. And they seem to fail to connect (when you futz around, try opening the case, try this, try that) much less often

- the volume control in the stalk is not something I use often, but it's convenient to have it there when better alternatives (like my aWatch) are not easily available.

Yes the sound cancellation is also better, but I notice that less than the above two issues.

Now that it’s been mentioned. Compared to USB-C cables Lightning cables not only are way more expensive, they are a rare thing to come by. In most shops there is a huge variety of USB-C cables to choose from in lengths/brands whereas Lightning I usually get standard Apple cables (if at all) at premium prices.

Interesting.

I don't where you live, but here in Finland most electronics and larger super market carry a wide variety of third party lightning and USB-C cables, and their price is more or less the same.

Also, how often do you need to buy a new cable in the spur of the moment?

I will no longer buy any electronic that doesn't come with USB-C, except for Apple products. USB-C would make it easier, but I have so many lightning cables from past products that I began recycling them, brand new. But if something comes with a micro USB, I'll look elsewhere.

I gifted my APP 1 to my spouse because they're the only Apple pods that fit his ear. I couldn't get a good fit and one of them fell out twice while walking down the street. I wanted to see if the XS tips would work better, so I just got a pair from Apple and snapped them on. Voilà -- they fit perfectly and feel secure! I don't (or didn't) think I had particularly small ears, but this has prompted me to order the APP 2.

I gave my APP1 and Beats Fit Pro to two of my sisters. The Beats had a great fit, but I always preferred the APP. They sound like a dream.

Interested to read these positive mentions of BOSE.

I thought BOSE was an acronym:

Buy
Other
Sound
Equipment.
I've had two cars with Bose sound systems in them, plus a Bose lifestyle 30 home theater system that I still use for listening to music, podcasts, and the occasional movie on. And a pair of 901 Series IV speakers that I bought back in 1995 or so that I'm thinking of hooking up again. There are still a lot of Bose users out there.

Had them for nearly 3 months (thanks to the generous costco return window) and returned them a few weeks ago. The Bose true wireless 2 are simply better for me. Better noise canceling (a BIG deal for driving), better sound quality, better battery, USBC, and ultimately the fit is better. With the airpods the base version slips out too easily which is frustrating at best and expensive at worst if you're on the go and they wiggle out or even fall out completely. I used a third party "foam" tips and it helped.

The single biggest "awesome" factor is being able to use the FindMy with the case cuz it's so easy to lose. But with airtags being small enough to just stick onto the case of the Bose I'm switching to those.

If someone gave me these for free I'd be thrilled but for just a few dollars more you can get something that's better in every way. I believe the only thing I miss about these was it seamlessly could work on multiple apple devices whereas with the bose I gotta actually click on my laptop to connect when I'm on here. Saving that few seconds every few days was kinda nice. :)
The Bose NC buds aren't really that great. Sony does a better job for less in that arena with the WF-1000XM4's, and sound better, too. Sound quality on the Bose is hot garbage (by comparison to Sony's or the APP2's) hidden behind a high end name.

Like both the APP2's and the Sony's so much for different reasons, that I couldn't decide between them and have both, but my experience with the Bose QC earbuds was seriously wanting beyond anything but NC, which is somewhere between the APP2 on the bottom and Sony on the top.
