Video Review: iMovie 08

    I think you kind of missed the point of iMovie '08. iMovie is targeted at people making home videos, with things from their camcorders. 99% of the time, they don't want or need the ability to razor clips or move them around in a timeline setting—that sort of thing is just confusing. Sit your mother down in front of iMovie '06, show her the basics, and see how quickly she can put together a video. Then sit her down in front of iMovie '08, show her how to select portions of video (click and drag, just like text!), put them one after another, move them around, and see how long it takes her then. Drag in titles, drag in transitions, drag in music... it's much easier to get a finished product in iMovie '08.

    It's not that iMovie '08 is more about organization, it's about getting away from the terminology and complication of actual video editing for the audience the software is aimed at: consumers with NO video editing experience. If you are a more experienced video editor who knows about codecs, audio tracks, and the basics of NLE editing, Final Cut Express is probably a better piece of software to be using.
